How is this calculated?
The camera and microphone (getUserMedia) feed the browser’s MediaRecorder. A WebM take has its length written into the file afterwards so players can seek.

About this tool

What it does

Webcam Recorder records video from your camera, with sound from your microphone, in the browser — a video message, a self-introduction for a job application, a practice talk, a quick demo. Turn the camera on and allow it when the browser asks; a preview shows what the camera sees, mirrored by default the way a mirror shows you (the recording itself is never mirrored, so writing reads the right way round). Choose 480p, 720p HD or 1080p Full HD: the camera is asked for that size and gives the nearest it can, and the page says exactly what it got, since many laptop cameras top out at 720p. If you have more than one camera, choose which. Press Record, pause and resume as you like, and press Stop and keep; each take is added below to watch, download or delete. The video is recorded and kept in this tab only, never uploaded, and the page asks before you close it with takes you have not saved. Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM; Safari records MP4.

How to use it
  1. Press Turn on camera and allow the camera and microphone.
  2. Pick the quality and camera; switch off the microphone for silent video.
  3. Press Record; Pause and Resume as needed; Stop and keep when done.
  4. Watch the take below and Download it.
Limits and your data
  • The quality is what your camera offers: asking for 1080p from a 720p camera gives 720p, and the page says so.
  • On phones, recording may stop if you switch apps or lock the screen; what was recorded is kept.
  • Long recordings are held in memory; record a long talk in parts on a phone.
  • Some players do not open WebM; use VLC or a browser, or convert it.
  • The camera is used only while it is on here, and the recording stays in this tab until you download it. Nothing is uploaded or kept after you leave.

Questions

Why does my recording look mirrored in the preview but not in the file?

The preview is mirrored so moving feels natural, like a mirror. The recording shows what others see, so text you hold up reads correctly.

Why is my 1080p recording only 720p?

Your camera does not offer 1080p. The page shows the size the camera actually gave.

Can I use my phone’s back camera?

Yes: once the camera is on, choose it from the Camera list.

Is the video uploaded anywhere?

No. It is recorded in your browser and stays there until you download it.
