About this page

What it shows

Convert an amount between the US dollar, euro, pound, rupee, yen and about 25 other currencies using the European Central Bank’s official reference rates. Pick a pair once and it is remembered on this device; the 30-day line shows whether the rate has been rising or falling.

Where the rates come from

The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates for around 30 currencies at about 16:00 Central European Time on every working day. The SmartTools server fetches that table from the ECB Data Portal after each publication and keeps every one, so the 30-day line is drawn from what it already holds. Your browser asks only our server, and the conversion between any two currencies is worked out here through the euro — rupees to dollars, for example, is rupees per euro against dollars per euro.

If the ECB service cannot be reached, the same ECB figures are fetched through Frankfurter, an open-source mirror, and the page says which source was used.

Why your bank shows a different number

A reference rate is a mid-market benchmark, not a price you can trade at. Banks, card networks and money-transfer services add a margin and sometimes a fee, so the amount you actually receive will be lower. Use this converter to understand the benchmark and to compare how much margin a provider is charging.

Rates are not updated on weekends or ECB holidays, so on a Saturday you will see Friday’s rates with their publication date.

Privacy

The amount you type never leaves your device. The page downloads the whole day’s rate table once, keeps it for six hours, and does every conversion in your browser.

Questions

Is this the live exchange rate?

No. It is the European Central Bank’s daily reference rate, published once per working day. Live dealing rates move every second and differ between providers.

Why is the Indian rupee to dollar rate different from RBI’s?

The Reserve Bank of India publishes its own reference rate at a different time of day. Both are benchmarks; small differences are normal.

Does it work offline?

Yes, with the last rates you loaded. The publication date is always shown so you know how old they are.

Which currencies are supported?

Every currency in the ECB’s daily reference table — about 30, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, CNY and SGD. Some currencies, such as the UAE dirham, are not in the ECB table.
