About this tool

What it does

Watermark PDF writes a line of text — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, SAMPLE, a company or client name — or places an image, such as a logo or a stamp, across every page of a PDF. Choose corner to corner or straight across, a colour for text or a size for an image, and how strong it is, from a faint 10% to solid. The mark is sized to each page, so a mix of A4, Letter and landscape pages all get a watermark that fits. You see it on the page pictures before you download, and the new file is opened again and every page checked for it before it is offered.

How to use it
  1. Choose a PDF, or drop it on the page.
  2. Type the watermark text and press Add to every page — or choose a PNG or JPEG image for a logo or stamp.
  3. Choose the direction, colour and strength. Each change shows on the pages straight away and can be undone with Ctrl+Z.
  4. Use the other tools as well if you need them — remove pages, reorder them, add page numbers — in the same place.
  5. Press Download PDF. The file is made, checked page by page, and offered.
Limits and your data
  • A watermark is a visible mark, not protection. It is text added on top of each page; anyone with a PDF editor can remove it. To stop copying or printing, a PDF needs a password and permissions: Protect PDF adds them.
  • The text uses Helvetica Bold, a font every PDF reader has, which covers Latin letters, digits and common punctuation (é, ü, –, “ ” included). Other Latin letters (ł, ő, ş), Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and India's nine major scripts are drawn in Noto fonts, carried inside the file; Chinese, Japanese and other scripts are not built yet, and the field says which characters it cannot draw.
  • Text is up to 60 characters, on one line. An image must be a PNG or JPEG up to 20 MB; a PNG keeps its transparency, and the image is stored in the file once however many pages carry it. Other formats (WebP, SVG, HEIC) are not built yet.
  • The watermark goes on every page of every file you download from the workspace, including each part of a split.
  • Files up to 300 MB each, 1 GB and 5,000 pages in all. A password-protected PDF asks for its password when added. Bookmarks and attachments of the original are not carried over, and a digital signature in the original is no longer valid.
  • Your PDFs are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep (the page asks before you leave with work not downloaded). The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and image decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in — none of those requests carries your document.

Questions

Will the watermark hide the text under it?

Not at the default strength of 20%: the page reads through it. At 60% or solid it can cover content, which is sometimes what a "SAMPLE" mark is for.

Can people still copy the text of my document?

Yes. The original text stays selectable and searchable; the watermark is added on top. That keeps the document usable, and it is why a watermark is a label, not a lock.

Can I put the watermark on some pages only?

Not yet: it goes on every page. A way round it is to extract the pages that need it, watermark them, and merge them back.

Does adding a watermark reduce quality?

No. The pages are copied as they are and the text is drawn on top as text, so nothing is re-compressed and the file grows by only a few kilobytes.

Can I remove a watermark from a PDF here?

No. Before you download, you can remove the one you added (or undo). Removing a watermark someone else added would mean editing the page's content, which this tool does not do.
