Video Trimmer — Cut a Clip from a Video
Cut the part you want out of an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video: fast without losing quality, or exact to the frame. The sound can be removed. Never uploaded.
Drag a file here, paste it, or choose one. Up to 4000 MB. It stays on your device.
The video is read in this tab and never uploaded. The clip is saved in the same format it came in.
How is this calculated?
The file is read in pieces by mediabunny, which splits it into its video and sound packets. Keep quality copies the packets from the key frame at or before your start to your end into a new file of the same kind; MP4 and MOV mark the ones before your start to be skipped. Exact decodes the frames in your range with the browser’s WebCodecs decoder and encodes them again; the sound is copied where it can be.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Video Trimmer cuts the part you want out of a video and saves it as a new file, in the same format it came in: an MP4 stays an MP4, a WebM stays a WebM, a MOV stays a MOV. Choose the video, then set the start and the end — type them, or play to a moment and press Start here or End here — and press Play this part to check it. There are two ways to cut. Keep quality copies the video’s frames exactly as they are, so nothing is lost and even a long clip takes seconds; a clip has to begin on a key frame (a full picture the frames after it are built from), so the frames from the key frame before your start come along — hidden in MP4 and MOV, so it plays from your start, but shown in WebM and MKV. Exact encodes the picture again at high quality, so the clip starts and ends on the very frames you chose; it takes about as long as the clip plays, longer on a phone. You can also remove the sound. Everything happens in this browser tab, using the browser’s own video decoders and encoders; the video is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose or drop a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV).
- Set the start and the end: type the times, or play to a moment and press Start here or End here.
- Press Play this part to check it.
- Choose Keep quality (fast) or Exact (re-encode), and whether to remove the sound.
- Press Save the clip. It is saved with its times in the file name.
Limits and your data
- In WebM and MKV, Keep quality starts on the key frame at or before your start — up to a few seconds early (most phone videos have one every one or two seconds, some screen recordings far fewer). Use Exact when the first frame matters.
- Exact needs a browser that can encode video in the page (WebCodecs): recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox can. Where it cannot, only Keep quality is offered.
- The clip is built in memory before it is saved, so a clip of several gigabytes may fail on a phone; cut a shorter part.
- The player shows only videos the browser can play. A file it cannot play (HEVC in some browsers, for example) can often still be cut with Keep quality — type the times.
- Subtitles and chapter marks are not carried into the clip.
- The video is read in this tab, a piece at a time, and never uploaded. The clip is made in the tab’s memory and saved straight to your device. Nothing is kept after you leave the page.
Questions
Will trimming lower the quality?
Not with Keep quality: the frames are copied, not re-encoded, so the clip is identical to that part of the original. Exact encodes the picture again at high quality, which changes it slightly.
Why does my clip start a little before the time I chose?
In a WebM or MKV clip made with Keep quality: it must begin on a key frame, and the nearest one before your start is used so nothing you asked for is lost. MP4 and MOV hide those frames. Choose Exact to start on the very frame in any format.
Can I remove the sound from a video?
Yes. Turn on Remove the sound before saving. To mute the whole video, leave the start at 0 and the end at the end; with Keep quality the picture is copied unchanged.
Is the video uploaded?
No. It is read and cut in your browser, on your device. You can turn off the internet after the page has loaded and it still works.
What formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV and M4V, WebM and MKV. The clip is saved in the same format as the original.
