Video Thumbnail Sheet

Make one image of a video’s frames in a grid — a contact sheet — with the time on each frame and the file’s details at the top. JPG or PNG, up to 4K wide.

Drag a file here, paste it, or choose one. Up to 4000 MB. It stays on your device.

The video is read in this tab and never uploaded. The sheet is one JPEG or PNG image.

How is this calculated?
Frame i of n is taken at (i + 0.5) × length ÷ n. Each thumbnail keeps the video’s shape: its width is (sheet width − gaps) ÷ columns.

Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.

About this tool

What it does

Video Thumbnail Sheet makes one image that shows a whole video at a glance: frames taken at even intervals and laid out in a grid, often called a contact sheet or storyboard. It is handy for previewing a long recording without watching it, choosing a clip, cataloguing videos, sending someone an overview, or checking a recording before publishing. Choose how many columns and rows (4 × 5 gives 20 frames), the sheet’s width from 1280 to 3840 pixels, and whether each frame shows its time in the corner and the top of the sheet shows the file’s name, size, picture size and length. The frames are taken from the middle of equal parts of the video, so the first and last are never the black fade at either end. The sheet is drawn on white like a printed page and saved as JPEG or PNG. The video is read by your browser and never uploaded.

How to use it
  1. Choose or drop a video.
  2. Set columns, rows and the sheet width; choose times and file details.
  3. Press Make the sheet and wait for the frames.
  4. Check the preview and Download it.
Limits and your data
  • Only videos your browser can play can be read (H.265/HEVC and ProRes often cannot be in Chrome or Firefox).
  • Very tall sheets are refused above about 16.7 million pixels, the most Safari can draw.
  • Long videos take a moment per frame, as the browser seeks to each.
  • The video is read in this browser tab; the sheet is drawn there too. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions

What is a contact sheet?

A single image of many frames in a grid, so the whole video can be seen at once, named after the sheets photographers printed from film.

How many frames should I use?

16 to 30 suits most videos; a long lecture or film may want 6 × 10.

Why are the first and last frames not the very start and end?

Each frame is from the middle of its part of the video, which avoids black frames at the start and end.

Can I print it?

Yes: it is drawn on white. Choose 2560 or 3840 pixels wide for a sharp print.
