Random Team Generator
Split a list of names into random teams by number of teams or people per team, with sizes that differ by at most one, fairly shuffled, and copy them as text.
Teams
Teams appear here. Every arrangement is equally likely.
People
10 people. One per line, or separated by commas.
How is this calculated?
Teams by size: number of teams = ⌊people ÷ size⌋ (at least one); then people are dealt round-robin, so sizes are ⌊people ÷ teams⌋ or one more.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Random Team Generator splits a list of people into random teams. Paste the names, then choose either how many teams you want or how many people should be in each, and press the button. The names are shuffled with the browser’s secure random number generator — every arrangement equally likely — and dealt out one at a time like cards, so the teams never differ in size by more than one person. When the group does not divide evenly by the team size you asked for, the page makes as many full teams as fit and spreads the extra people one per team, rather than leaving someone alone in a team of one. Shuffle again for a new draw, and copy the teams as text to paste into a chat or a document. It suits classrooms, sports, workshops, quiz nights and office projects.
How to use it
- Type or paste the names, one per line or separated by commas.
- Choose Number of teams or People per team, and set the number.
- Press Make teams; press Shuffle again for a different draw.
- Copy the teams as text to share them.
Limits and your data
- Teams are random, not balanced by skill, gender or age. For balanced teams, run it per group (for example, juniors and seniors) and combine the results.
- Names listed more than once are kept and flagged, since two people can share a name.
- Up to 1,000 people and 50 teams.
- There is no option yet to keep certain people together or apart.
- The names stay in your browser, kept on this device for next time; nothing is uploaded.
Questions
How do I split 25 students into 4 groups?
Paste the names, choose Number of teams and set 4. You get one group of 7 and three of 6.
What if the numbers do not divide evenly?
Sizes differ by at most one. With people per team, extra people are added to existing teams instead of forming a tiny team.
Is it really random?
Yes. It uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by crypto.getRandomValues, so every arrangement is equally likely.
Can I name the teams?
They are numbered. When you copy them as text you can rename them before sharing.
