About this tool
What it does
Split PDF cuts one PDF into several smaller ones. Split every few pages — every page on its own, or every 2, 5 or 10 pages — split in half, type the ranges you want, such as 1-3, 4-10, 11-, or split by file size so every part fits an email or upload limit, such as 10 MB. The panel lists the files it will make before you make them, and they download together in one ZIP, each named after the pages it holds. You can also reorder, rotate or delete pages first: the split uses the pages as they are in the workspace.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF, or drop it on the page.
- In the Split panel, choose how to split: every few pages, by page ranges, by file size, in half, or every page on its own.
- For ranges, type one range per file, separated by commas. 8- means page 8 to the end, and a page may appear in more than one range.
- Check the list of files it will make, then press Download. Several files come as one ZIP; a single file comes as a PDF.
Limits and your data
- Page numbers are the pages' places in the workspace as it is now. If you have moved or deleted pages, the numbers follow.
- Files up to 300 MB each, 1 GB and 5,000 pages in all. A password-protected PDF asks for its password when added.
- Pages are copied as they are, which keeps their quality, but what belongs to the whole document rather than to a page is not carried over: bookmarks, the document outline, file attachments and accessibility tags. Links between pages may stop working. The title of the first file is kept.
- Fillable form fields keep their appearance but may no longer be fillable, and any digital signature in the original is no longer valid in the new file — a signature covers the exact file that was signed.
- Your PDFs are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep (the page asks before you leave with work not downloaded). The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and image decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in — none of those requests carries your document.
Questions
How do I save every page as a separate PDF?
Choose "Every page on its own". A 20-page file becomes 20 PDFs, named document-page-1.pdf to document-page-20.pdf, inside one ZIP.
What can I type as a range?
A single page (5), a run (2-6), from a page to the end (8-), from the start to a page (-3), or last for the final page. Separate files with commas. A backwards run such as 6-2 puts those pages in reverse order.
Why do I get a ZIP file?
Browsers ask before saving many files at once, and some refuse. One ZIP holds them all; every computer and phone can open it. The PDFs inside are stored as they are, not compressed again.
How does splitting by file size work?
Type the most each file may be, such as 10 MB. The parts are made in page order, each with as many pages as fit: every part is built and measured, a few tries each, because fonts and pictures shared by pages are stored once per file and a part is not the sum of its pages. 1 MB counts as 1,000,000 bytes, the stricter meaning. A single page larger than the limit goes in a file of its own, and you are told which.
Is anything lost when splitting?
Each page keeps its own content exactly. What belongs to the whole document — bookmarks, attachments, accessibility tags — is not carried into the parts.
