About this tool
What it does
A slug is the readable part of a web address that names a page — the “how-to-file-itr-1” in example.in/blog/how-to-file-itr-1. The Slug Generator turns a title into one: lower case, words joined with hyphens, punctuation removed. Accented letters lose their accents (Crème brûlée becomes creme-brulee), letters with no accent to remove are spelt the usual way (ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, ł becomes l), and common symbols are written as words, so “Salt & Pepper” becomes salt-and-pepper and “100% Cotton” becomes 100-percent-cotton. Apostrophes join a word instead of splitting it, so “Don’t” gives dont rather than don-t. Paste a whole list of titles, one per line, and you get one slug per line, ready to copy into a CMS or a spreadsheet.
How to use it
- Type a title, or paste several, one per line. Try an example shows three.
- Choose the separator: a hyphen is the usual choice for web addresses; some systems want an underscore.
- Set Longest to 40, 60 or 80 characters if your site or SEO plugin has a limit. A slug is always cut at a whole word.
- Copy the slugs, or download them as a text file with one per line.
Limits and your data
- With Plain a–z and 0–9 only on (the default), letters from scripts that have no a–z form, such as Devanagari, Tamil or Chinese, are left out — the page tells you when this happens. Turn it off to keep them; browsers show them as written and send them percent-encoded.
- Letters are not transliterated between scripts: “आयकर” is not turned into “aaykar”. Write a Latin-script title if you want a Latin-script slug.
- Leave out a, the, of… removes English words only, and never removes every word of a title.
- Symbols spelt out are &, @, %, +, ₹, $, € and £. Other symbols are dropped.
- The generator doesn’t know which slugs your site already uses; your CMS adds -2 when a slug is taken.
- Slugs are made in your browser. Your titles aren’t uploaded or saved, so unpublished headlines stay unpublished.
Questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google’s guidance is to use hyphens to separate words in URLs, because it treats a hyphen as a space between words; an underscore can join two words into one. Use underscores only where a system requires them, such as some file names or database keys.
How long should a slug be?
Short enough to read at a glance: three to six words is typical. There is no fixed limit that helps ranking, but long slugs are cut off in search results and are harder to share. Leaving out small words such as “the” and “of” shortens a slug without losing its meaning.
Can a slug be in Hindi?
Yes. Turn off Plain a–z and 0–9 only and the Devanagari letters, with their vowel signs, stay in the slug. Browsers show the address in Hindi; behind the scenes it is sent percent-encoded, which is why it looks long when copied into some apps.
Should I change the slug of a page that is already published?
Only with a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one. Otherwise links and bookmarks to the page break and its search ranking is lost.
