About this tool
What it does
Photo Details Viewer and Remover shows what a picture carries besides the picture itself, and takes it out. Phones and cameras write EXIF details into every photo: often the exact place it was taken as GPS coordinates — which can be your home — the phone model, the date and time, sometimes the owner's name, and editing software adds XMP and comments. Before you post or send a photo, see what is in it here, then remove it. Removal does not re-save the picture: the details are cut out of the file and the picture data is copied exactly, so the photo looks identical, byte for byte, and loses no quality. JPEG, PNG and WebP files can be cleaned, one at a time or all together into a ZIP.
How to use it
- Choose pictures, or drop them on the page. A picture that records where it was taken is marked.
- In Details, read what the picture shown carries: camera, time, place, software, author.
- Leave Keep the colour profile ticked unless you want everything gone; the profile holds no personal details.
- Press Remove the details, or Make all for every picture.
- Read what was removed and download the clean files.
Limits and your data
- Only JPEG, PNG and WebP can be cleaned without re-saving. HEIC, GIF and others can be converted first in Image Converter, which saves them afresh without any of these details.
- A photo that a phone stood upright with its EXIF orientation may show on its side once the details are gone. You are told; turn it in Rotate first, which saves it upright in its pixels.
- Details shown are the common ones; every block found is removed, whether or not it is listed.
- What is visible in the picture — a street sign, a face, a screen — is not changed. Only the hidden details are removed.
- Your pictures are read in this browser tab and never uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else — the reason to clean them here rather than on a site that receives them. Nothing is kept after you close the tab.
Questions
Do WhatsApp or Instagram remove the location from my photos?
Most large social apps remove it when they resize a photo, but files sent as documents, by email, through cloud links or on many smaller sites keep it. Cleaning first means you do not have to know.
Will removing the details change how the photo looks?
No. The picture data is copied exactly; only the separate blocks of details are left out. The one exception is orientation, which you are warned about.
How do I know the location is really gone?
Add the cleaned file here again: it will show no place, and Details will list nothing but, if you kept it, the colour profile.
Can I stop my phone saving the location?
Yes: turn off location for the camera app in your phone's privacy settings. Photos taken before that still carry it.
