QR Code and Barcode Scanner
Scan a QR code or barcode with your camera, or read one from a photo or screenshot. See exactly what it holds before opening anything.
Result
Point the camera at a code, or open a photo or screenshot of one. Nothing is opened or sent: you see what a code holds before you decide what to do with it.

About this tool
What it does
QR Code and Barcode Scanner reads codes with your phone’s or laptop’s camera, or from a photo or screenshot you open or paste. It shows what the code holds before anything happens: the full web address with a warning if it looks deceptive, a Wi-Fi network’s name and password, a contact card’s details, a calendar event, a location, a phone number or message, or the UPI ID and amount of a payment request. Nothing is opened, dialled or paid automatically; you copy the content or follow a link yourself once you have read it. That matters because QR codes are a common way to slip someone a fake payment request or a look-alike website. Where the browser has its own barcode detector — Chrome on Android, ChromeOS and macOS — it also reads EAN, UPC, Code 128 and other barcodes; everywhere else it reads QR codes with a decoder that runs in the page.
How to use it
- Press Start camera and allow the camera when asked, then hold the code inside the square.
- Or press Open an image, or paste a screenshot, to read a code from a picture.
- Read what the code holds. Copy it, or open a link in a new tab if it is what you expected.
- Earlier scans from this visit are listed underneath until you leave the page.
Limits and your data
- Barcodes other than QR need the browser’s built-in detector, which Firefox and Safari do not have yet; on those, QR codes still work.
- The camera needs a secure (https) page and your permission. If you refused it, allow the camera for this site in the browser’s settings.
- Very small, blurred, curved or glossy codes may need a closer, steadier, better-lit view; a photo taken with the camera app often works when the live view does not.
- Warnings about a link are hints — a user name before @, look-alike letters, a bare IP address or no encryption — not a safety check of the site itself.
- Only the first code in a picture is read.
- The camera picture and images are decoded in your browser and never uploaded. The camera turns off as soon as a code is found or you leave the page, and scans are not saved.
Questions
Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?
Yes. Press Open an image and choose the screenshot, or copy it and paste it into the page. That is useful for a code someone sent you on WhatsApp or in an email.
Is it safe to scan a payment QR code?
Scanning only shows the UPI ID, name and amount. Check the UPI ID is who you mean to pay — the name inside a code can say anything — and remember that you never need to scan a code or enter a PIN to receive money.
How do I see a Wi-Fi password from a QR code?
Scan the code: the network name and password are shown as text, so you can type them on a device without a camera.
Why does it not read barcodes on my iPhone?
Safari does not yet give web pages a barcode detector, and a decoder for every barcode type would be a large download. QR codes are read on every browser.
