About this tool
What it does
The Planner keeps your to-do list and your habits in one place. Add a task with an optional due date and say whether it is important, urgent, both or neither. The task list shows what is overdue and due today first, then the rest; the Matrix shows the same tasks in the four boxes of the urgent/important (Eisenhower) matrix — do first, schedule, delegate, drop — and a button moves a task between them. Ticking a task off keeps it under Done until you clear it, and the list downloads as a spreadsheet file. Habits are things you mean to do on certain days: read every day, the gym on weekdays, a call home on Sundays. Tick off each day; the Planner counts your current streak and your best one, and how many of the scheduled days you managed in the last 30. Everything is saved in this browser on this device and works offline; a backup file moves it to another device.
How to use it
- Type a task under Tasks, add a due date if it has one, tick Important and Urgent as they apply, and press Add.
- Work from the top of the list: overdue first, then today. Tick a task when it is done.
- Open Matrix to sort tasks by urgency and importance; use Move to put a task in another box.
- Under Habits, name a habit, choose its days and press Add habit. Tick the day each time you do it.
- Download a backup now and then, and before you clear the browser.
Limits and your data
- Up to 2,000 tasks and 50 habits; task titles up to 200 characters, notes up to 2,000. Habits keep about ten years of ticks.
- Days are calendar days on this device’s clock. A habit ticked late at night counts for that day; travel across time zones can move a tick by a day.
- There are no reminders or notifications: the page cannot wake itself to remind you. Pin the tab or open it each morning.
- Two devices do not sync by themselves: move a backup file between them. Restoring a backup replaces what is on this device.
- Your tasks and habits are kept only in this browser on this device (they are in Export my data and removed by Delete everything). Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Clearing site data, or Safari after seven days unused, removes them — keep a backup file.
Questions
What is the Eisenhower matrix?
A way to sort tasks by two questions: is it important (does it move something you care about forward) and is it urgent (does it have to happen soon)? Important and urgent: do it first. Important, not urgent: schedule a time for it — this is where most real progress happens. Urgent, not important: hand it to someone else or do it quickly. Neither: drop it. It is named after President Dwight Eisenhower, who described the idea in a 1954 speech.
How is a habit streak counted?
It counts the scheduled days you ticked in a row, up to today. Days a habit is not meant for — Saturday and Sunday for a weekday habit — neither break the streak nor add to it. Today does not break it before you tick it; the streak runs to yesterday until then. Missing a scheduled day starts it again from zero, and your best streak is kept.
Can I tick a habit for a day I forgot?
Yes. The habit shows the last seven days; tick any of them and the streak and the 30-day count update.
Does it remind me when a task is due?
No. A web page cannot run while it is closed, and we will not send your tasks to a server to remind you. Overdue and due-today tasks come first in the list and are counted at the top of the page, so open it each morning.
How do I move my planner to my phone?
Download a backup on the computer, send the file to your phone, and open Restore on the phone. Restoring replaces what was on the phone.
