About this tool

What it does

PDF Comments lists every comment a PDF holds — sticky notes, highlights, underlines, text boxes, drawings, stamps — page by page, with who wrote each one and when, and its replies under it as a thread. You can reply to a comment, delete one, or delete all of them, for example to send a clean copy of a document that went round for review. Deleting a comment deletes its replies and its pop-up window too, as Acrobat does. Deleted comments are crossed out on the page pictures until you download, and the new file is opened again and checked to hold exactly the comments that are left. Links and form fields are not comments and are never touched.

How to use it
  1. Choose a PDF, or drop it on the page. Add more PDFs to clean or review them together.
  2. Read the list: each page with comments, each comment with its kind, author, date and text, replies indented under it.
  3. Press Delete comment to remove one with its replies, or Delete all comments for a clean copy. Ctrl+Z undoes either.
  4. Press Reply to answer a comment; type, add your name if you like, and press Add reply.
  5. Press Download PDF. The file is made, checked comment by comment and offered; your original is not changed.
Limits and your data
  • Deleting a comment removes it from the file. It does not remove the page text a highlight was on, and it does not remove what a document's history may keep elsewhere; to remove text for good, use Redact PDF.
  • A comment cannot be edited here, only answered or deleted. New comments are added in Edit PDF, with Comment.
  • The list shows the first 200 comments; Delete all comments covers every one. A comment's text is shown up to 5,000 characters.
  • Comments on a page you redact, or on pages made pictures by Compress, are not kept; the result says how many were left out.
  • Files up to 300 MB each, 1 GB and 5,000 pages in all. Bookmarks and attachments of the original are not carried over, and a digital signature in the original is no longer valid.
  • Your PDFs are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep. Comments often name people and say things meant for a few readers — they are read here, by your own browser, and go nowhere. The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in; none of those requests carries your document.

Questions

How do I remove all comments from a PDF?

Add the PDF, press Delete all comments, then Download PDF. Every note, highlight and other mark someone added is left out, and the check confirms none remain; the page text, links and form fields stay.

Will my reply show in Acrobat?

Yes. It is written as a PDF reply to that comment, so Acrobat, Chrome, Firefox and other readers show it threaded under the comment, with your name if you gave one.

Why are some comments crossed out on the page?

Those are the ones you deleted. The page pictures still come from your original file, so they show them crossed out until you download; the new file does not contain them.

Are highlights comments?

In a PDF, yes: a highlight added in a reader is an annotation like a note, often with a comment attached, and it is listed and deleted the same way. Highlights that are part of the page itself, printed or scanned in, are not annotations and stay.
