About this tool

What it does

Passport Photo Maker turns a photo you took against a plain wall into a passport or visa photo of the right size: 35 × 45 mm, the size used in India, the United Kingdom, the Schengen countries and many others, or 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inches) for the United States. A frame of exactly that shape lies over your photo; move it and size it so your face sits as your form describes. The photo is saved at 300 dots per inch — 413 × 531 pixels for 35 × 45 mm, 600 × 600 for 2 × 2 inches — and, if an online application sets a file size, kept under it. Tick the sheet option for a 4 × 6 inch print with as many copies as fit, ready for any photo lab or home printer.

How to use it
  1. Take a photo facing the camera in even light, against a plain light wall, and add it here.
  2. Choose the photo size your form asks for.
  3. Drag the frame over your face and drag its corner to size it, or type the values; arrow keys move it too.
  4. If the form sets a file size, type it in KB. Tick the print sheet if you want copies to print.
  5. Press Make it, read the size and pixels, and download the photo or the ZIP with the sheet.
Limits and your data
  • This sizes and frames the photo; it does not judge it. Rules on head height, background colour, glasses, expression and age of the photo differ between countries and forms — follow your own form's instructions.
  • The background is not removed or changed: take the photo against a plain light wall.
  • Only the two sizes that are the same everywhere they are used are offered; for any other size, crop and resize in Crop Image and Resize Image.
  • Print the sheet at 100% ("actual size"), not "fit to page", or the photos will not be the right size.
  • Your photo is cropped and saved in this browser tab and never uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else; nothing is kept after you close the tab. A photo of your face is personal data — it stays on your device.

Questions

What size is an Indian passport photo?

35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), the first size here. Online applications also set a file size and format; type the size in KB if yours gives one.

How many photos fit on the print sheet?

Eight 35 × 45 mm photos, or two 2 × 2 inch photos, on 4 × 6 inch paper, with thin grey lines to cut along.

Can I use a phone selfie?

A photo taken by someone else from about a metre away is better: selfies at arm's length distort the face. Use the rear camera, in daylight, without flash.

Why 300 dpi?

It is the resolution photo labs print at and the one passport rules that state a resolution ask for, so the photo prints at exactly its size.
