Lorem Ipsum Generator

Placeholder text by paragraphs, sentences or an exact number of words, as plain text or HTML.

Settings

The words come from the traditional Lorem ipsum passage, a scrambled piece of Cicero’s Latin. They mean nothing on purpose, so the layout is judged, not the words.

About this tool

What it does

Lorem ipsum is the placeholder text designers and developers use to fill a layout before the real words exist. Because it looks like ordinary prose — words of different lengths, sentences that end, paragraphs of a few sentences — a page, a card or a poster can be judged on its shape, without readers being distracted by what it says. This generator makes as many paragraphs or sentences as you need, or an exact number of words for a field with a word limit. It can start with the familiar “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” so the text is recognised as placeholder at a glance, and it gives you plain text or HTML paragraphs ready to paste into a template. Every press of New text gives a fresh variation of the same kind of text.

How to use it
  1. Choose what to make: paragraphs, sentences or words.
  2. Set how many with the slider or by typing a number.
  3. Leave Start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” on if you want the classic opening, and choose plain text or HTML.
  4. Copy the text or download it. Press New text for a different variation.
Limits and your data
  • Up to 50 paragraphs, 200 sentences or 2,000 words at a time — more than a long article. Press New text and append if you really need more.
  • Sentences are between 6 and 14 words, and paragraphs between 4 and 7 sentences, so the text has the rhythm of ordinary writing. It isn’t meant to imitate any particular language’s word lengths.
  • The text is Latin-looking nonsense. To test a layout in Hindi or another script, use real sample text in that script: word lengths, line heights and line breaking differ a lot between scripts.
  • HTML gives one <p> element per paragraph and nothing else, so it fits into any template.
  • Placeholder text must be replaced before a page goes live. Search engines treat pages full of it as unfinished.
  • The text is made in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. There is nothing personal in it to send.

Questions

Where does Lorem ipsum come from?

From a passage of Cicero’s philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, cut and scrambled into filler. The version used today spread through dry-transfer lettering sheets in the 1960s and desktop publishing software in the 1980s; the often-repeated story that printers used it in the 1500s has never been shown. Cicero’s text is in the public domain.

Does Lorem ipsum mean anything?

Not as written. The words are Latin, or fragments of Latin, but they have been rearranged so that sentences don’t make sense. That’s deliberate: meaningless text keeps reviewers looking at the design rather than reading the words.

How many words is a paragraph?

Here, a paragraph is four to seven sentences of six to fourteen words, so usually 40 to 80 words. If you need an exact count — say, a 150-word bio field — choose Words and set the number; you get exactly that many.

Is the text the same every time?

No. The opening sentence is always the same when you ask for it, but the rest is drawn afresh each time you change a setting or press New text, so repeated blocks on a page don’t look copied and pasted.
