FPS to Frame Time Calculator

Convert frames per second to milliseconds per frame and back, compare with your screen’s refresh rate, and see why 144 to 240 FPS gains less than 30 to 60.

  • Frame time = 1000 ÷ frames per second. Going from 30 to 60 FPS saves 16.7 ms a frame; from 144 to 240 only 2.8 ms — each step up gains less.
  • The game matches the screen: one new frame for each refresh.
  • An average FPS can hide stutter: a steady 60 feels smoother than an average of 70 with frames that sometimes take 30 ms.

Frames

How is this calculated?
Frame time (ms) = 1000 ÷ FPS. FPS = 1000 ÷ frame time. A screen at r Hz refreshes every 1000 ÷ r ms.

About this tool

What it does

FPS to Frame Time Calculator converts frames per second into the milliseconds each frame takes, and back. At 60 FPS a frame lasts 16.67 ms; at 144 FPS, 6.94 ms; at 240, 4.17. Frame time is what you feel: a game that averages 70 FPS but sometimes takes 30 ms over a frame stutters, while a steady 60 feels smooth, which is why benchmarks report frame times and 1% lows as well as the average. A table lists the frame time at the common rates, and shows why each step up gains less: going from 30 to 60 FPS saves 16.7 ms a frame, from 144 to 240 only 2.8 ms. Add your screen’s refresh rate to see how the two fit — one new frame per refresh, more frames than the screen can show (which can tear without V-Sync or a cap, but gives fresher frames), or fewer (some frames held for two refreshes, which adaptive sync smooths).

How to use it
  1. Choose whether you have FPS or milliseconds.
  2. Enter the number.
  3. Add your screen’s refresh rate if you like.
  4. Read the frame time, the table and how it fits your screen.
Limits and your data
  • It converts averages; real frame times vary from frame to frame.
  • Input lag also depends on the game, the display and the mouse, not frame time alone.
  • Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

How many milliseconds is 60 FPS?

16.67 ms a frame.

How many ms is 144 Hz?

6.94 ms between refreshes.

Is more FPS than my refresh rate useful?

It can lower input lag a little, since the frame shown is fresher, but the screen still shows only its refresh rate; tearing may appear without sync.

Why does my game stutter at a high FPS?

Uneven frame times: a few long frames among fast ones. Capping the frame rate slightly below what the game reaches often smooths it.
