About this tool
What it does
Fill PDF Form fills in the fields of a fillable PDF — text boxes, tick boxes, radio buttons, drop-down lists and lists — with a plain form beside the page, each field labelled with its name. Download it still fillable, so it can be changed later in any PDF reader, or locked (flattened), so the answers become part of the page and nobody can alter them. The filled file is opened again before it is offered, and every answer is read back from it to check that it is there.
How to use it
- Choose the PDF form, or drop it on the page. The Forms panel lists its fields, with any answers already in it.
- Type and choose your answers. Read-only fields are shown but cannot be changed.
- Tick "Lock the answers" if the form should not be edited after you send it.
- Press Fill and download. The file is filled, checked answer by answer, and saved.
- To sign it as well, open the filled file in Sign PDF.
Limits and your data
- Only fillable PDFs have fields. A form that is just printed lines has none; use Edit PDF to type text where the answers go.
- Answers are drawn with the form's built-in font, which covers Latin letters, digits and common punctuation. Hindi and other scripts cannot be drawn in a field yet; the panel says which answers are affected.
- Forms made with Adobe LiveCycle (XFA) are partly supported: their standard fields are filled and the XFA layer, which only Adobe Reader shows, is removed so every reader shows the same answers.
- Signature fields and buttons are not filled. Scripts in a form (calculated totals, checks on what you type) do not run here.
- The form is filled in its original file. Changes made with the other workspace tools — page order, page numbers, edits — are not part of it.
- Your files are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep. The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and image decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in — none of those requests carries your files.
Questions
What does locking (flattening) do?
It turns each answer into part of the page and removes the fields. The form looks the same, prints the same, and cannot be changed in a PDF reader any more. Keep an unlocked copy if you may need to correct it.
Why are the fields named oddly?
The names are the ones the form's maker gave its fields, such as "txtName" or "Check Box 3". Look at the page beside the panel to match them up.
Will a government or bank form accept this?
The file is an ordinary filled PDF, the same as filling it in Adobe Reader. Whether a typed or locked form is accepted, and whether it needs a wet or digital signature, is up to whoever asked for it.
My PDF has boxes but no fields are listed. Why?
The boxes are printed, not fillable. Use Edit PDF and place text in them; it is drawn on top of the page.
