About this tool
What it does
Edit PDF adds things on top of a PDF's pages: text in Helvetica, Times or Courier, PNG and JPEG images such as a logo or a stamp, rectangles and ellipses, lines and arrows, highlights, freehand drawing, and comments — sticky notes that any PDF reader lists with the document's comments. Each one can be moved by dragging or with the arrow keys, resized from its corner, recoloured, put in front of or behind the others, duplicated or deleted, and every change can be undone. What you add stays on the content it was put on, even if you rotate or crop the page afterwards. When you download, the new file is opened again and checked: every page must carry everything you placed on it, and every line of your text, word for word.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF, or drop it on the page. The page opens large; Page Up and Page Down move between pages.
- Pick what to add — Text, Image, Comment, Rectangle, Ellipse, Line or Arrow. It appears in the middle of the page, selected.
- Drag it where it goes, and drag the small square at its corner to resize it. For text, type in the Text box on the right; Enter starts a new line.
- For Highlight, drag across the lines you want marked. For Draw, draw with a mouse, finger or pen, then press Done drawing.
- Click anything you added to change it later; with it selected, arrow keys move it, Delete removes it, Esc lets go. Ctrl+Z undoes.
- Press Download PDF. The file is made, checked and offered.
Limits and your data
- The page's own text and pictures cannot be edited — everything you add goes on top. Replace words covers each place a word appears with a white box of its size and writes yours over it at the same size, in the nearest standard font: an overlay, because the old word stays in the file underneath, and copying or searching still finds it. Words across two lines, turned text and scans are left alone, and on a coloured background the white box shows.
- A white rectangle over something hides it on screen and on paper, but what is underneath stays in the file and can be copied or uncovered. Never use it to hide private information; use Redact PDF, which removes it.
- Latin text uses the built-in PDF fonts. Other Latin letters, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, India's nine major scripts and ₹ are drawn in Noto fonts, carried inside the file and shaped as a browser shapes them. Chinese, Japanese and Korean are drawn too; emoji are not built yet, and the text box names what it cannot draw.
- Images: PNG and JPEG up to 20 MB, placed as they are. Text you add is real text in the file, but it is not linked to a form field.
- Files up to 300 MB each, 1 GB and 5,000 pages in all. A password-protected PDF asks for its password when added. Bookmarks and attachments of the original are not carried over, and a digital signature in the original is no longer valid.
- Your PDFs and the images you add are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep (the page asks before you leave with work not downloaded). The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and image decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in — none of those requests carries your document.
Questions
Can I fill in a form with this?
You can type onto any form by placing text where the answers go, which works for forms that are only printed lines. A PDF with real fillable fields is better filled with Fill PDF Form, which writes the answers into the fields themselves.
How do comments work?
Press Comment, drag the note where it belongs and type; add your name as its author if you like. It is saved as a real PDF comment, not drawn: Acrobat, Chrome, Firefox and phone readers show a note icon that opens to your text and list it with the other comments, where it can be answered. Comments on a page you redact, or on pages made pictures, are left out, and you are told.
Can I change a word that is already in the PDF?
Only by covering it. In Replace words, type the word and its replacement, press Find the words, then Replace all: each place gets a white box and your word on top, which you can then move or restyle. To take a word out of the file for good, use Redact PDF.
Is the text I add searchable?
Yes. It is written into the file as text, so it can be searched, selected and copied like the page's own words.
What happens to what I added if I rotate the page?
It turns with the page, as if it were printed on it. If you add text to a page that is already turned, it is placed upright as you see it.
Can I edit the same file again later?
Yes, but what you added becomes part of the page when you download, so it can no longer be selected and moved here. Keep the tab open while you work, or keep your original file.
