About this tool
What it does
Crop PDF trims the edges of pages: wide white margins, a scanner's dark border, crop marks, or a header you do not want printed. Enter how many millimetres to cut from the top, right, bottom and left, for every page or only the pages you select. What will be cut is shaded on the page pictures before anything is made, and after you download, the new file is opened again and each page's new size checked.
How to use it
- Choose a PDF, or drop it on the page.
- Select the pages to crop; with none selected, the crop applies to every page.
- Enter the millimetres to cut from each edge. Top, right, bottom and left are as you see the page, even if it is turned sideways.
- Press Crop. The cut edges are shaded on the pages; undo with Ctrl+Z, or Remove crop.
- Crop other pages by different amounts in the same way, then press Download PDF.
Limits and your data
- Cropping hides, it does not delete. It sets the visible area of each page — the PDF "crop box" — and everything outside it stays in the file. Any PDF editor can show it again. Do not crop to remove private information; delete the page instead.
- Each page must keep at least 12.7 mm (half an inch) each way; pages a crop would make smaller are left as they were, and the panel says how many.
- Blank pages added in the workspace are not cropped. Crop amounts are entered in millimetres, one value per edge; there is no drawing a box on the page yet, and no automatic "trim white margins".
- Files up to 300 MB each, 1 GB and 5,000 pages in all. A password-protected PDF asks for its password when added. Bookmarks and attachments of the original are not carried over, and a digital signature in the original is no longer valid.
- Your PDFs are read and written in this browser tab. They are not uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else, and nothing is saved: closing the tab ends the session, so download what you want to keep (the page asks before you leave with work not downloaded). The page downloads its own code, and pdf.js's fonts and image decoders when a page needs them, from toolsdev.in — none of those requests carries your document.
Questions
Does cropping make the file smaller?
No. The content outside the crop is still in the file, so the size barely changes. To make a file smaller, use Compress PDF.
Will a printer print the cropped area?
No. Readers and printers show and print the crop box, so the cut edges are neither seen nor printed.
Can I crop pages by different amounts?
Yes. Select some pages and crop them, then select others and crop them by another amount. Each page keeps its own crop.
Why does a rotated page crop on the side I expect?
The edges you enter are the edges as the page is seen on screen. The workspace works out which edge that is in the file, so "top" is always the top you see.
Can I undo a crop after downloading?
Your original file is never changed. The cropped file still holds the whole page, so a PDF editor can reset its crop box; or crop the original again here.
