About this tool
What it does
Crop Image cuts a picture down to the part you want. A frame lies over the picture: drag it to move it, drag its round corner to make it larger or smaller, or type its position and size in pixels for an exact crop. Choose a shape — square, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 3:4 or the tall 9:16 of stories — and the frame keeps it while you resize; choose Free to crop any shape. The frame starts as the largest of the shape, centred. A photo that a phone saved on its side is shown upright first, as your phone shows it, and if you turned it in Rotate, the crop applies to the turned picture. The cropped file is opened again and checked to be exactly the size of the frame.
How to use it
- Choose a picture, or drop it on the page.
- Pick a shape, or leave it Free.
- Drag the frame where you want it and drag its corner to size it. With the keyboard, Tab to the frame and use the arrow keys; Shift moves further, Alt changes the size.
- For exact values, type From left, From top, Width and Height in pixels.
- Press Make it and download.
Limits and your data
- One picture is cropped at a time, each with its own frame; to give many pictures the same size, crop them and then use Resize Image.
- Cropping keeps the pixels inside the frame and adds none: a tight crop of a small picture is a small picture.
- The cropped picture is saved afresh, so the camera, time and location details of the original are not carried over.
- Your pictures are cropped in this browser tab and never uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else; nothing is kept after the tab closes. The page downloads only its own code.
Questions
How do I crop a photo to a square?
Choose Square (1:1) as the shape. The frame becomes the largest square that fits, centred; drag it over the part you want and press Make it.
Can I crop to an exact size in pixels?
Yes. Type the width and height under Frame. With a shape chosen, typing one sets the other to keep the shape.
Will cropping lower the quality?
The pixels kept are not changed, but the file is saved again; in JPEG that is at 92% quality, which is hard to tell from the original. Save as PNG to lose nothing.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes: drag the frame with a finger, and its corner to resize. The page does not scroll while you drag on the picture.
