Convert
80% is hard to tell from the original for photos; below 50% blocks and smears show.
JPEG: photos, smallest files, no transparency. PNG: drawings, screenshots and transparency, no loss. WebP: smaller than both, opened by every current browser but not by some older programs. A GIF is saved as its first frame.
Made in this browser. Your pictures are not uploaded, and nothing is kept after you close the tab.

About this tool
What it does
Image Converter saves pictures in another format: PNG to JPG for a smaller photo, JPG to PNG for an editor that wants PNG, WebP to JPG for a program that cannot open WebP, or JPG and PNG to WebP for a faster website. HEIC photos from iPhones, AVIF, GIF and BMP can be converted too wherever your browser can open them. For JPEG and WebP you set the quality; for JPEG, which cannot be transparent, you choose the colour transparent parts become — white by default, so a logo does not turn black. Add many pictures and convert them all at once into one ZIP. Each file is opened again after it is made and checked before it is offered.
How to use it
- Choose pictures, or drop them on the page.
- In Save as, pick JPEG, PNG or WebP.
- For JPEG or WebP, set the quality; for JPEG, pick the colour for transparent parts.
- Press Make it for the picture shown, or Make all for every picture.
- Download the file, or the ZIP of all of them.
Limits and your data
- HEIC opens in Safari and recent versions of other browsers on Apple devices, and AVIF in most current browsers; where a format does not open, you are told rather than given a broken file.
- A browser that cannot write WebP (older Safari) says so; choose JPEG or PNG there.
- An animated GIF becomes a still picture of its first frame.
- Converted files are saved afresh, so the camera, time and location details of the original are not carried over; colour profiles other than standard sRGB are converted to it.
- Converting a JPEG to PNG does not bring back detail JPEG compression removed; it only stops more being lost.
- Your pictures are converted in this browser tab, in a background worker, and never uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else. Nothing is kept after the tab closes; the page downloads only its own code.
Questions
Why is my PNG larger than the JPEG it came from?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which takes far more room for a photo. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, drawings, text and transparency; for photos, JPEG or WebP is.
How do I convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG?
Add them here in Safari or another browser that opens HEIC, choose JPEG and press Make all. If your browser cannot open them, set the iPhone to save JPEGs (Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible) for new photos.
Which quality should I choose?
For photos, 80–90% looks the same as the original at a fraction of the size. Lower saves more but blocks and smears begin to show below about 50%.
Will a transparent PNG stay transparent?
In PNG and WebP, yes. JPEG cannot hold transparency, so the transparent parts become the colour you choose.
