Chart Studio — Bar, Line, Pie, Scatter and Histogram

Paste a table once and draw it as a bar, line, pie, scatter or histogram, with the right chart suggested for your data. Download SVG, PNG or CSV. Data stays in your browser.

Suggested: line. The first column is dates or periods: a line shows the change over time.

Sales by month

Line chart of Online, In store over 6 points from Jan to Jun. Online goes from 42 to 66. Use the arrow keys to read each point, or switch to the table.

  • Online
  • In store

Copy cells from a spreadsheet, or type CSV: the x values (dates, months, years) in the first column, in order, and one column of numbers for each line (up to 8). A first row of headings names the lines. An empty cell leaves a gap.

The same table draws every chart: switch to compare. Bar, line and pie read names then numbers; scatter reads x then y; a histogram reads one column of numbers.

How is this calculated?
Bar and line: names, then one column per series. Pie: names and one column. Scatter: x, then y (up to three groups). Histogram: one column of numbers, binned by Sturges’ rule (k = 1 + log₂ n) unless you choose.

About this tool

What it does

Chart Studio draws one table as any of five charts, so you can see which tells your story best without pasting the data five times. Copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets, or type or open a CSV, and switch between a bar chart, a line chart, a pie or donut, a scatter plot and a histogram. The page reads the shape of your table and suggests a chart, with the reason: dates, months or quarters down the first column suggest a line, since the point is change over time; numbers in the first column suggest a scatter of how two measures move together; a single column of numbers suggests a histogram of how they are spread; named categories suggest bars, which compare amounts on a common baseline. A pie is never pushed: it is right only when the parts make up one whole, which only you know, so it is offered as an option. Every chart is drawn with the same care: colours checked for colour-blind readers and never the only way to tell series apart, a legend for more than one series, values in a tooltip and read aloud with the arrow keys, a table view of the numbers, and a light or dark look that follows the site. Bars can be upright or sideways, grouped or stacked; lines can start at zero and show every point; the scatter adds a least-squares trend line with its equation and r²; the histogram picks tidy bins by Sturges’ rule or your count and gives the mean, median and standard deviation. Download the chart as SVG for print and slides, PNG for documents and chat, or the data as CSV.

How to use it
  1. Paste or type your table, or open a CSV file.
  2. Read the suggestion, or choose any chart.
  3. Set the title and that chart’s options.
  4. Download SVG, PNG or CSV.
Limits and your data
  • Up to 1,000 rows and 8 series; a pie shows the six largest parts and adds the rest up as Other.
  • The suggestion reads the table’s shape, not its meaning: if the rows are parts of one whole, a pie may suit better than bars.
  • One value axis only, by design: two measures of different scale belong in two charts.
  • The data and the charts stay in your browser. What you are working on is kept on this device only, never in the page address or on a server.

Questions

Which chart should I use for my data?

Compare amounts across categories with bars; show change over time with a line; show how two measures relate with a scatter; show how values are spread with a histogram; use a pie only when the parts make one whole. The studio suggests one from your table and says why.

Can I paste from Excel?

Yes. Copy the cells, including the heading row, and paste them into the data box; tabs, commas and semicolons are all understood.

Can I use the chart in a presentation?

Download it as SVG to keep it sharp at any size in slides and print, or as PNG for documents and chat.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The chart is drawn in your browser; your work is kept on this device only.
