Bar Chart Maker

Make a bar chart from pasted spreadsheet data: upright or sideways, grouped or stacked, up to 8 series. Download SVG, PNG or CSV. Data stays in your browser.

Sales by month

A bar chart of Online, In store for 6 month values. Online is highest for Jun at 66. Use the arrow keys to read each point, or switch to the table.

  • Online
  • In store

Copy cells from a spreadsheet, or type CSV: names in the first column, one column of numbers for each series (up to 8). A first row of headings names the series.

How is this calculated?
Each bar’s length is proportional to its value, from zero. Stacked bars add the series per row: positive values stack up, negative values down.

About this tool

What it does

Bar Chart Maker turns a table into a bar chart you can download. Copy the cells from a spreadsheet (Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice) and paste them, or type CSV: the names of the bars in the first column and the numbers in the next, with a heading row if you want the series named. With one column of numbers you get one bar per row, with its value printed at the end; with two to eight columns, each row becomes a group of bars, side by side or stacked, and a legend names each colour. Bars can stand upright or run sideways, which suits long names. The value axis always starts at zero, because a bar’s length is its value — a bar chart that starts anywhere else exaggerates differences. Hover over a group, or tab to the chart and use the arrow keys, to read its exact values; switch to the table to see every number. Download the chart as an SVG (sharp at any size, editable in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma), a PNG for documents and slides, or the data as CSV. The colours are chosen to stay distinguishable for people with colour-vision deficiency, in light and dark themes.

How to use it
  1. Paste or type your table, or open a CSV file.
  2. Give the chart a title.
  3. Choose upright or sideways, and side by side or stacked.
  4. Hover to check values, then download SVG, PNG or CSV.
Limits and your data
  • Up to 8 series and 1,000 rows; more colours than eight cannot be told apart reliably.
  • Every series shares one axis: series in very different units belong in separate charts.
  • Stacked bars make only the bottom series easy to compare; use side by side to compare series.
  • The chart is drawn in your browser. The data you paste is not uploaded or kept.

Questions

How do I make a bar chart from Excel data?

Select the cells including the headings, copy, and paste them into the data box. The first column becomes the bar names.

Should the axis start at zero?

Yes, for bars: their length is the value, so a cut axis makes small differences look large. This tool always starts at zero.

Grouped or stacked?

Side by side to compare series within each group; stacked to show totals and how each is made up.

Can I use the chart in a presentation?

Download the PNG for slides and documents, or the SVG to edit or print at any size.
