About this tool

What it does

Adjust Image fixes the look of a photo: brighten one taken in poor light, darken one that is washed out, add contrast to a flat scan, make colours more vivid or quieter, turn it black and white, soften it with a blur, or sharpen a slightly soft picture. Move the sliders and a preview shows the result a moment later; when it looks right, make the photo at its full size. The same settings can be applied to every picture you add, downloaded together as a ZIP. The adjustments are worked out on the pixels themselves, so they come out the same in every browser — including older Safari, which ignores the browser's own filter effects — and each file is opened again and checked before it is offered.

How to use it
  1. Choose pictures, or drop them on the page.
  2. Move Brightness, Contrast, Colour, Blur or Sharpen, or tick Black and white. The preview follows.
  3. Press Reset to start again.
  4. Choose the format to save in, or keep the same one.
  5. Press Make it for the picture shown, or Make all for every picture, and download.
Limits and your data
  • The adjustments apply to the whole picture; there is no brush for one part of it.
  • Brightening cannot bring back detail lost in pure black or white, and sharpening cannot rescue a badly blurred photo: it makes edges crisper, it does not recover what the camera missed.
  • Blur is three box blurs, very close to a photo editor's Gaussian blur; its radius is in the picture's own pixels, so the preview of a large picture looks the same as the result.
  • Adjusted pictures are saved afresh, so the camera, time and location details of the original are not carried over.
  • Your pictures are adjusted in this browser tab, in a background worker, and never uploaded to ToolsDev or anyone else. Nothing is kept after you close the tab; the page downloads only its own code.

Questions

How do I fix a dark photo?

Raise Brightness a little, then add some Contrast so it does not look grey. Small steps — 10 to 25 — usually look most natural.

What is the difference between Colour −100 and Black and white?

None in the result: both turn the picture to grey using the brightness the eye sees in each colour. Black and white is there so you do not have to find the end of the slider.

Can I blur a face or a number plate?

Not one part only: the blur covers the whole picture. To hide part of a picture, crop it out in Crop Image.

Will adjusting many photos give them all the same look?

The same changes are applied to each, so a set taken in the same light comes out matching. Photos taken in different light may need different settings.
