The monsoon arrived early this year. By the second week of June the streets were full of puddles, the mango sellers had covered their carts with blue sheets, and every school bag smelled faintly of wet canvas. Nobody minded much. After a long summer, the sound of rain on a tin roof felt like a reward for patience.

Mistakes are marked with a red underline; fix them with Backspace or carry on. Pasting is turned off.

How is this calculated?
WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes (including corrected mistakes).

About this tool

What it does

Typing Speed Test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Choose 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes, then type the text shown — the clock starts with your first key, so there is no rush to begin. Each character turns dark as you type it correctly, and a mistake is marked in red with a wavy underline, so errors are visible without relying on colour; fix them with Backspace or carry on. Words per minute are counted the standard way, where a "word" is five characters including spaces: the correct characters you typed, divided by five, divided by the minutes. Accuracy counts every keystroke, including mistakes you later corrected, so fixing an error does not hide it. At the end you see your WPM, accuracy and what your speed means, and your best for each length is kept on this device. The passages are written for this test: everyday sentences with ordinary punctuation, joined so that even a very fast typist never runs out. Pasting is turned off.

How to use it
  1. Choose the test length.
  2. Click in the box and start typing the text; the clock starts with your first key.
  3. Keep going until the time runs out.
  4. Read your WPM and accuracy; try again to beat your best.
Limits and your data
  • Phone keyboards with autocorrect may change words; this page asks the keyboard not to, but some ignore it.
  • Speeds on a physical keyboard and a touch screen are not comparable.
  • Everything runs in your browser. What you type is not sent anywhere; only your best score is kept, on this device.

Questions

What is a good typing speed?

About 40 WPM is average; 60 is fast; 80 or more is professional-level. Accuracy above 95% matters as much as speed.

How is WPM calculated?

Correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes: 250 correct characters in a minute is 50 WPM.

Do corrected mistakes count against accuracy?

Yes. Accuracy counts every keystroke, so a mistake you fixed still lowers it, but no longer lowers your WPM.

How do I type faster?

Keep your fingers on the home row, look at the screen, and practise accuracy first; speed follows.
