About this tool

What it does

Klondike is the solitaire most people know. A shuffled deck is dealt into seven piles: the first has one card, the last seven, and only the top card of each is face up. The rest of the deck is the stock. The aim is to build all four suits up on the foundations, from Ace to King. On the seven piles you build down in alternating colours — a red six on a black seven — and you can move a whole run of face-up cards together. When a face-down card is uncovered it turns over. Only a King, or a run starting with one, may go into an empty pile. Press the stock to turn cards onto the waste, one at a time or three at a time; when the stock runs out, pressing it again turns the waste back over. Every card shows its rank and suit symbol as well as its colour, so you never have to tell the suits apart by colour alone. Undo takes back any number of moves, a new deal is always one press away, and once every card is face up a Finish button plays the rest for you. Your time and number of moves are counted, and your fastest win is kept on this device for each draw mode.

How to use it
  1. Choose draw one (easier) or draw three (the traditional, harder game).
  2. Select a card or the top of a run, then the pile or foundation to put it on.
  3. Double-click a card, or use Send to foundation, to move it up directly.
  4. Press the stock when you are stuck; Finish it appears once nothing is hidden.
Limits and your data
  • Not every deal can be won; the shuffle is random and no deal is checked in advance.
  • Unlimited passes through the stock, with no scoring by points — the game counts time and moves instead.
  • A game in progress is not saved if you leave the page.
  • The deal and every move happen in your browser. Your best times are kept on this device only.

Questions

Is draw three harder than draw one?

Yes. With draw three only every third card of the stock is playable on each pass, so many more deals cannot be won.

Can every game of solitaire be won?

No. Most Klondike deals can be won with perfect play, but some cannot, and draw three wins far less often. Start a new deal when you are stuck.

Can I move a card back down from a foundation?

Yes. Select the foundation’s top card and then a pile where it fits; this is sometimes the only way forward.

What can go into an empty pile?

Only a King, either on its own or with the run built on it.

How do I play with the keyboard?

Every card you can move is a button: Tab to it, press Enter to pick it up, then Tab to where it goes and press Enter. Screen readers hear each card’s name and what happened.
