About this tool

What it does

Snake is the classic arcade game made famous on early mobile phones: steer a snake around a 20 × 20 field to eat the food, and with every bite it grows one square longer. Run into a wall or into your own tail and the game is over. As the snake grows the field fills up and steering gets harder, so plan your path ahead. Choose a speed — Slow, Normal or Fast — and whether the walls are solid or the snake goes through them and comes out the other side. Steer with the arrow keys or W A S D, by swiping on the board, or with the four buttons under it on a phone. Two quick turns in a row both count, and the snake can never turn straight back into itself. The game runs at the same speed on any screen, because it moves on a fixed clock rather than once per frame, and it pauses itself if you switch tabs. Your best score for each speed is kept on this device.

How to use it
  1. Choose a speed and whether walls are solid.
  2. Press Start or Space.
  3. Steer to the food with arrows, W A S D, a swipe or the buttons; Space pauses.
  4. Avoid the walls and your own tail.
Limits and your data
  • The game is visual and needs sight to play; the score is announced at the end.
  • Click or tap the board first so the arrow keys steer the snake rather than scroll the page.
  • The game runs in your browser. Best scores are kept on this device only.

Questions

How do I play Snake?

Steer the snake to the food to grow. Do not hit the walls (unless Go through walls is on) or your own body.

Why did my turn not register?

A turn straight back the way you are going is ignored, and only two turns can wait at once. Turn a little earlier.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes: swipe on the board or use the four buttons under it.

Is the speed the same on every screen?

Yes. The snake moves on a fixed clock, so a fast screen does not make it faster.
