Pattern Memory

Tiles light up for a moment; pick them all from memory. Each level adds a tile and the grid grows. Three lives, keyboard or touch, and your best level kept.

Level1
Lives3
How is this calculated?
Tiles lit = level + 2 (always fewer than the grid holds). Grid: 3 × 3 to level 3, 4 × 4 to 7, 5 × 5 to 12, 6 × 6 to 18, then 7 × 7.

About this tool

What it does

Pattern Memory tests your visual memory. A grid of tiles appears and some of them light up — white, with a dot in the middle, so the pattern does not depend on seeing colour. After a moment they go dark, and you pick out every tile that was lit, in any order. Get them all and the next level lights one more tile; as the pattern grows, so does the grid, from 3 × 3 up to 7 × 7, which makes it harder to hold in mind. Three wrong tiles in a level cost one of your three lives and the level starts again with a new pattern; lose all three and the game ends. Your best level is kept on this device. It plays with a mouse, by touch, or with the keyboard: the arrow keys move between tiles and Enter or Space picks one, and the tiles are announced to screen readers as lit, found or wrong.

How to use it
  1. Press Start and watch the tiles that light up.
  2. When they go dark, pick every tile that was lit.
  3. Clear the level to move on; three wrong picks cost a life.
  4. See how far you get with three lives.
Limits and your data
  • The pattern shows for a set time (longer at higher levels); it cannot be paused.
  • The game runs in your browser. Only your best level is kept, on this device.

Questions

Why does it get harder so quickly?

Each level adds a tile, and the grid grows too, so there are more places a tile could be. Short-term visual memory holds only a few items at once, which is why grouping helps.

What happens when I lose a life?

The same level starts again with a new pattern. With all three lives gone, the game ends and your level is saved if it is your best.

Is there a trick?

Group the tiles into shapes — a line, an L, a corner — rather than remembering each one.

Does the order matter?

No. Pick the lit tiles in any order.

Can I play with the keyboard?

Yes: Tab to the grid, move with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space to pick.
