Click or Enter to open a square, right-click, long-press or F to flag. On an open number with all its mines flagged, click it to open the rest around it. Arrow keys move.

How is this calculated?
Each number = the mines among the eight squares around it. You win when every square without a mine is open.

About this tool

What it does

Minesweeper is the classic logic puzzle: a field of covered squares hides a number of mines, and you uncover every square that is safe without opening a mine. Each uncovered square shows how many of its eight neighbours hold a mine; a square with no mines around it opens its neighbours automatically, so one click can clear a whole area. Use the numbers to work out where the mines must be and flag them. Three standard levels are here: Beginner (9 × 9 with 10 mines), Intermediate (16 × 16 with 40) and Expert (30 × 16 with 99). Your first click is always safe and always opens an area — the mines are only placed after it, away from that square and its neighbours — so every game starts with something to work from. Once a number has all its mines flagged, click it to open all its other neighbours at once (called chording), the quickest way to play. Your best time for each level is kept on this device.

How to use it
  1. Choose a level and click any square to start.
  2. Read the numbers: a 1 next to a single covered square means that square is a mine.
  3. Flag mines with right-click, a long press, F, or by turning on Tap to flag.
  4. Click a number whose mines are all flagged to open the rest around it.
Limits and your data
  • Like the original, some boards need a guess: two squares with the same evidence can leave a 50-50.
  • The Expert board is 30 squares wide and scrolls sideways on a narrow phone.
  • Flags cannot be placed before the first click, since the mines are placed by it.
  • The game runs in your browser. Best times are kept on this device only.

Questions

How do you play Minesweeper?

Open squares and read the numbers: each says how many mines touch that square. Flag the squares that must be mines and open the ones that must be safe until every safe square is open.

Can the first click be a mine?

No. The mines are placed after your first click, never on that square or next to it.

How do I play with the keyboard?

Tab to the board, move with the arrow keys, open a square with Enter or Space and flag it with F.

What is chording?

Clicking an open number whose mines are all flagged opens every other square around it. A wrong flag loses the game, so flag carefully.
