About this tool
What it does
Math Challenge is a sixty-second mental arithmetic game. Press Start and a sum appears; type the answer and press Enter, and the next one comes at once. Answer as many as you can before the time runs out. Easy has addition and subtraction up to 20, with no answers below zero; Medium adds two-digit addition and subtraction, times tables to 12 and the matching divisions; Hard has two-digit by one- or two-digit multiplication, larger divisions, three-digit addition and mixed sums such as 7 × 12 − 15. Every question is made so the answer is a whole number — a division is built from a multiplication — and when you get one wrong the right answer is read out so you can learn it. The board flashes green or red briefly as you answer (the counts of right and wrong show the same). Your best score for each level is kept on this device. It is a quick daily workout for times tables and number sense, for children and adults alike.

Questions
What is a good score?
It depends on the level and on practice; the best measure is your own best, kept for each level. Speed comes from knowing the times tables by heart rather than working them out.
Does a wrong answer cost points?
No, only the time it took. The correct answer is read out so the next one comes easier.
Are the questions ever impossible?
No: every answer is a whole number, and on Easy it is never negative.
Can children use it?
Yes. Easy suits early primary school; Medium practises times tables.
How is 7 × 12 − 15 worked?
Multiplication first: 84 − 15 = 69.
