Breakout

Breakout is the classic brick-breaker arcade game. A ball bounces around the field, and you move a paddle along the bottom to keep it in play; every brick it hits disappears and scores points — the higher rows are worth more. Where the ball meets the paddle decides its angle: the middle sends it straight up, the edges send it out wide, which is how you aim for the last few bricks. Miss the ball and you lose one of three lives. Clear every brick and the next level begins with a fresh wall and a slightly faster ball. Play with the left and right arrow keys or A and D, follow the mouse, drag a finger, or use the two buttons under the board; Space or the Launch button sends the ball, and pauses and resumes. The game runs on a fixed clock, so it plays at the same speed on any screen, and it pauses itself when you switch tabs. Your best score is kept on this device.

1. Press Launch or Space to send the ball.
2. Move the paddle with the arrows, A and D, the mouse or a finger.
3. Aim with the paddle’s edges to reach the last bricks.
4. Clear the wall to reach the next level; you have three lives.
