2048

2048 is a single-player sliding puzzle on a four-by-four grid. Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go; two tiles with the same number merge into one with their sum. Keep merging to build a tile worth 2048 — and keep going for a higher score.

1. Click or tap the board, then press an arrow key (or W, A, S, D) — on a phone, swipe across the board.
2. All tiles slide in that direction. Matching neighbours merge and their total is added to your score.
3. After each move a new 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears in an empty cell.
4. Reach the 2048 tile to win, then choose to keep going or start again.
5. The game ends when the board is full and no two neighbouring tiles match.

• New tiles appear at random, so two games from the same position can play out differently.
• An unfinished game is not saved if you leave the page.
• The on-screen arrow pad appears on touch devices; on a computer use the keyboard.
• The game runs entirely in your browser and works offline. Your best score and play history are stored only on this device and can be exported or deleted from the You page.

Keep your largest tile in one corner and build a descending chain along the edge next to it. Avoid moving in the direction that would pull that tile out of its corner.

Yes. After reaching 2048 choose Keep going; tiles of 4096, 8192 and higher are possible with careful play.

A move only counts if at least one tile can slide or merge in that direction. Try another direction — and make sure the board has focus.
