A calm front page for the day: what is making news around the world, the Wikipedia articles most people are reading, events that happened on this date in history, the top technology stories and the latest space news. Every headline links to its original source.
Where the headlines come from
World events come from Wikipedia’s “In the news” section, written and checked by volunteer editors, together with the day’s most-read articles and “On this day” — all through the Wikimedia Foundation’s official Feed API. The SmartTools server collects them every 15 minutes, so this page is one request rather than sixteen, and those sources are asked at a steady rate instead of once per visitor.
Technology stories are the current front page of Hacker News, ranked by its community. Space stories come from the Spaceflight News API, which collects articles from NASA, ESA, SpaceNews and other publishers.
What SmartTools does and doesn’t do
SmartTools shows titles, short plain-text summaries and a link. It does not rewrite, rank or store articles, does not load third-party images or trackers, and opens every link in a new tab without sending the page you came from.
No account and no keys are involved, and nothing about you is sent — only requests for the day’s public lists, refreshed every 10 to 30 minutes.
Questions
Why not show more news sources?
Most news APIs require a secret key that cannot be kept private in a website without a server. SmartTools only uses sources that are free, official and safe to call directly from your browser.
Is the news filtered or personalised?
No. Everyone sees the same lists, in the order each source publishes them.
How current is it?
Lists refresh every 10 to 30 minutes, and each section shows when it was last updated.
