About general awareness
General awareness sections mix things that never change with things that changed last week. The questions here are all from the first group: which Article protects life and liberty, when an Act came into force, what the SI unit of force is.
Current affairs are deliberately not here. A fact about who holds an office or what this year’s figure is needs a dated source and a date it will be re-read, and a superseded fact taught to somebody revising is worse than no question at all. Every question below names where it can be checked.
The settled material rewards connecting things rather than listing them. Knowing that the 42nd Amendment added three words to the Preamble and ten Fundamental Duties, and that the 44th removed a Fundamental Right, is three facts that hold each other in place.
Where marks get lost
- Confusing adoption with commencement.
- The Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. Both dates are real and they answer different questions.
- Counting Fundamental Rights as seven.
- Six. The right to property was taken out of Part III by the 44th Amendment in 1978 and became a legal right under Article 300A.
- Dating an institution from when it was nationalised.
- The Reserve Bank began in 1935 and was nationalised in 1949. Questions ask for the first far more often than the second.
- Treating photosynthesis and respiration as the same exchange.
- Photosynthesis takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. Respiration runs the other way. They are easy to swap under time pressure.
