How is this calculated?
Measured, not guessed: refresh rate is the median gap between animation frames; graphics pass when a drawn pixel reads back the right colour; the microphone passes when speech peaks above −50 dBFS without clipping; a click counted twice within 80 ms marks a worn switch.

About this tool

What it does

Device Check tests a whole laptop, desktop, tablet or phone from one page and gives you a report you can keep. It is made for the moments that matter: buying or selling a used laptop, checking a new one inside its return window, handing a machine back to IT, or describing a fault in a support ticket. As soon as the page opens it runs the automatic checks, which need no permission: it reads the browser and operating system (Windows 11 told apart from 10), the screen’s resolution, scaling and measured refresh rate, colour range and HDR; it draws a real test image with the graphics chip and reads it back, and warns when graphics run in software; it writes to and reads back the browser’s storage; it reads the connection and, where the browser shares it, the battery. Then come the hands-on tests, each under a minute: a full-screen screen test for dead pixels, bleed and uneven areas; a keyboard test that needs twenty different keys and catches a key stuck down; a mouse or touchpad test for both buttons, scrolling and a switch that double-clicks by itself; a multi-touch test on touch screens; left and right speaker tones; a microphone level check; and the camera’s real resolution and frame rate. Every card shows Passed, Check this, Failed or Not tested, and results that only a person can judge — what you saw on the screen, what you heard — are marked as yours in the report. Name the device, then copy the report, download it as text or JSON for an asset register, or print it to PDF.

How to use it
  1. Open the page on the device you are testing; the automatic checks run at once.
  2. Work down the hands-on tests, or skip any that do not apply.
  3. Type a name for the device (model, asset number) if you want it in the report.
  4. Copy, download or print the report.
Limits and your data
  • Web pages cannot read battery health, disk health (SMART), temperatures, serial numbers or the exact processor model. Use the maker’s diagnostics (Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage, Apple Diagnostics) for those.
  • It cannot test internet speed, Wi-Fi strength, USB ports, HDMI output or the fingerprint reader.
  • Screen faults and sounds are judged by the person testing; the report says so.
  • Battery and connection details are shared only by Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers.
  • Everything runs in your browser and works offline. The camera and microphone are used only while their test runs and are switched off straight after; nothing is recorded, uploaded or stored. The report exists only on this page until you copy or download it.

Questions

What should I check before buying a used laptop?

Run every test here: the screen on all colours, every key, both buttons and scrolling, the speakers on each side, the microphone and the camera. Then check the battery with the maker’s tool or the system report, and look over the hinges, ports and charger.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The page makes no network requests for the tests, the camera picture never leaves the page, and the report is only what you choose to copy or download.

Why does the graphics check say software?

The browser is drawing with the processor instead of the graphics chip, usually because hardware acceleration is off in its settings or the graphics driver is blocked. Turn acceleration on and restart the browser.

Can I use the report for an IT ticket or asset register?

Yes. The text report pastes into a ticket or chat, and the JSON download holds the same results as data for a spreadsheet or inventory system.
