How is this calculated?
Each unit is a fixed number of litres: 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L = 4 qt = 8 pt = 128 fl oz; 1 US cup = 8 US fl oz; 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L = 8 UK pt = 160 UK fl oz; 1 m³ = 1,000 L; 1 ft³ = 28.316846592 L; metric teaspoon = 5 mL, tablespoon = 15 mL.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Volume Converter changes a volume or capacity from one unit to another and lists it in every other unit at once: millilitres, litres, cubic metres, metric teaspoons and tablespoons, US cups, US and UK fluid ounces, US and UK pints, US quarts, US and UK gallons, cubic inches and cubic feet. It keeps the US and UK units apart, because they genuinely differ — a UK (imperial) gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, and a UK fluid ounce is about 4% smaller than a US one — which is the usual source of confusion in recipes, fuel figures and product labels. Every unit uses its exact legal definition: the US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres (231 cubic inches), the UK gallon exactly 4.54609 litres. Conversions are done in decimal arithmetic.
How to use it
- Type the amount.
- Choose its unit and the unit you want, or press a common conversion. Check US or UK.
- Read the answer and the table of every unit.
Limits and your data
- Converting volume to weight (a cup of flour in grams) depends on the ingredient’s density and is not done here.
- Spoons here are metric (5 and 15 mL). US customary spoons are slightly smaller (4.93 and 14.79 mL) and Australian tablespoons are 20 mL.
- The US cup used here is the customary cup (236.6 mL). Nutrition labels in the US use a 240 mL “legal cup”, and many countries use a 250 mL metric cup.
- Dry measures (US dry pints, bushels) are not included.
- Conversions run in your browser; nothing is sent.
Questions
How many litres are in a gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres. Fuel economy in mpg differs between the US and the UK for this reason.
How many millilitres is a cup?
A US customary cup is about 236.6 mL. Recipes from Australia, New Zealand and much of the world use a 250 mL metric cup.
How many litres is a cubic foot?
Exactly 28.316846592 litres. A 300-litre fridge holds about 10.6 cubic feet.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume; an ounce measures weight. A US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces.
