How is this calculated?

What it does
Length Converter changes a length or distance from one unit to another — centimetres to inches, feet to metres, kilometres to miles and back — and lists the same length in every other unit underneath, so one entry answers several questions. It covers micrometres, millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles. The imperial units use their exact international definitions from 1959: an inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, a foot exactly 0.3048 metres, a mile exactly 1,609.344 metres, and a nautical mile exactly 1,852 metres. Calculations are done in decimal arithmetic, not binary floating point, so a mile comes out as exactly 5,280 feet rather than 5,279.999999. Buttons for the common conversions set both units in one press, and the swap button turns the conversion around.

Limits and your data
- Answers are shown to ten significant figures, which is more precision than any measurement you are likely to convert.
- The US survey foot (about 2 parts per million longer than the international foot) is not included; it was retired in the US at the end of 2022.
- Heights written as feet and inches (5′ 8″) need converting in two parts: 5 ft and 8 in. 5′ 8″ is 172.72 cm.
- Astronomical and atomic units (light-years, ångströms) are not in this list.

Questions
How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54. That has been the definition of the inch since 1959, so 10 cm is 3.937 inches and 12 inches is 30.48 cm.
How do I convert my height from cm to feet and inches?
Convert to inches, then take whole feet: 170 cm is 66.93 inches, which is 5 feet and 6.93 inches (66.93 − 60).
How many kilometres is a mile?
