18 km/L =
| Litres per 100 km | 5.555555556 L/100 km |
|---|---|
| Miles per gallon (US) | 42.338625 mpg (US) |
| Miles per gallon (UK) | 50.84656854 mpg (UK) |
How is this calculated?
L/100 km = 100 ÷ (km/L). mpg (US) = km/L × 3.785411784 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ km/L × 2.352. mpg (UK) = km/L × 4.54609 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ km/L × 2.825.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Fuel Economy Converter turns a car’s fuel figure from one country’s way of stating it into another’s. India and much of Asia quote mileage in kilometres per litre; Europe, Australia and Canada in litres per 100 kilometres; the United States in miles per US gallon; and the United Kingdom in miles per imperial gallon, which is a bigger gallon, so the same car shows a higher mpg there. These are not simple multiples of one another: litres per 100 km is the reciprocal of kilometres per litre, so a higher number means a thirstier car. The converter works through kilometres per litre with exact unit definitions — a mile is 1.609344 km, a US gallon 3.785411784 L, a UK gallon 4.54609 L — so 20 km/L is exactly 5 L/100 km.
How to use it
- Type the figure.
- Choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, or press a common conversion.
- Read the answer and the figure in every other unit.
Limits and your data
- Official figures come from standard test cycles (ARAI in India, WLTP in Europe, EPA in the US) that differ from each other and from real driving; converting the unit does not convert the test.
- Zero and negative figures are refused: they would mean no distance or no fuel.
- Electric car efficiency (kWh per 100 km, miles per kWh) is a different quantity and is not included.
- Because the scales are reciprocal, averaging two cars’ km/L figures is not the same as averaging their L/100 km figures.
- Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent.
Questions
What is 18 km/L in L/100 km?
About 5.56 L/100 km (100 ÷ 18). The page opens with this example.
Why is UK mpg higher than US mpg for the same car?
An imperial gallon is about 4.55 litres, a US gallon about 3.79, so a car goes further on a UK gallon. 50 mpg (UK) is about 41.6 mpg (US).
Is a lower L/100 km better?
Yes: it is fuel used per distance, so lower is more economical. With km/L and mpg, higher is better.
How do I convert mpg to km/L?
Multiply US mpg by about 0.4251, or UK mpg by about 0.3540. 30 mpg (US) is 12.75 km/L.
