- Each year loses 15% of what the vehicle is worth at its start, so the loss shrinks year by year.
- These are your rates, not a market price: resale depends on the make and model, kilometres, condition, fuel type and demand. For insurance, the IDV is set by your insurer under IRDAI’s rules.

How is this calculated?
A share each year: loss = value at the start of the year × rate. The same each year: loss = (price − end value) ÷ years.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Vehicle Depreciation Calculator shows how a car’s or bike’s value falls year by year, so you can plan when to sell, budget for the next one, or see what a used vehicle might be worth. Two methods are offered. A share each year (reducing balance) takes a fixed percentage of what the vehicle is worth at the start of each year: the loss is largest in the first years and shrinks later, which is how vehicles usually lose value. The same each year (straight line) takes an equal amount every year until the vehicle reaches the value you expect at the end of its life. Enter the price you paid, the method and its rate or end value, and the years to show; a table lists every year’s starting value, loss and ending value, in rupees and paise, adding up exactly. The rate is yours: actual resale value depends on the make and model, the kilometres, condition, fuel type, ownership and local demand, so check prices for similar vehicles.
How to use it
- Enter the price paid.
- Choose a method and enter its rate, or the end value and years.
- Choose how many years to show.
- Read the value now and the year-by-year table.
Limits and your data
- It does not know market prices; the rate is an estimate you choose.
- The insured declared value (IDV) on a motor policy is set by the insurer under IRDAI’s rules, not by this calculator.
- For tax depreciation of a business vehicle, follow the Income-tax Act’s block rates with your accountant.
- Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Questions
How much does a car depreciate each year?
Commonly around 10–20% a year, more in the first year; it varies a lot by model and condition.
Which method should I use?
A share each year matches how vehicles usually lose value. The same each year is simpler and suits planning to a fixed end value.
What will my 5-year-old car be worth?
At 15% a year, an ₹8 lakh car is worth about ₹3.55 lakh after five years. Check listings for your model to choose a rate.
Is this the IDV for insurance?
No. The IDV is set by your insurer; this estimates value for your own planning.
