About this tool

What it does

Travel Budget Calculator plans what a trip will cost in total, per person and per day, before you book. Enter how many are travelling, the days and nights, and the rooms you need, then the costs as they are usually quoted: return tickets per person, the room per night, food per person per day, local travel per day for the group (cabs, autos, a hired car), activities and entry fees per person, and anything else, such as visas, insurance or shopping. A buffer — 10% to start with — covers what was not planned, because trips nearly always cost a little more than the plan. It gives the total, each line’s share, the cost per person and per day, all in rupees and paise, adding up exactly. Every figure is yours: change the room rate or the days and see the total move, to compare destinations, hotels or how long to stay.

Questions

How do I plan a trip budget?

List the big costs — travel, stay, food, local transport and activities — per person or per day, add them up, and keep 10–15% spare.

How much buffer should I keep?

10% suits a planned trip; 15–20% abroad or where prices are unfamiliar.

Should nights be one less than days?

Usually: a five-day trip has four nights. Enter both as they are for your trip.

Can I plan in another currency?

The figures are shown in rupees; convert costs in other currencies to rupees first.
