Tile Calculator

Work out how many floor or wall tiles to buy: area, tile size (600 × 600, 2 × 2 ft or your own), grout joint, wastage for straight or diagonal, and boxes.

Tiles

Tiles to buy3430.8 tiles cover 11.1 m² (120 sq ft); plus 10% for cuts and breakage
Boxes of 4
9
  • Tiles = area ÷ (tile + joint)², here 600 + 2 by 600 + 2 mm = 0.3624 m² each, plus wastage, rounded up.
  • 10% wastage suits a straight layout; diagonal layouts cut every edge tile, so allow 15%. Keep a few spare for repairs later.

Area and tiles

2–3 mm is usual for vitrified tiles.
How is this calculated?
Tiles = area ÷ ((tile width + joint) × (tile height + joint)) × (1 + wastage), rounded up. Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up.

About this tool

What it does

Tile Calculator works out how many floor or wall tiles to buy for a room, a bathroom wall or a kitchen backsplash. Enter the length and the width (or height, for a wall) in feet or metres, and choose the tile size: the common Indian sizes are listed — 600 × 600 mm (2 × 2 ft), 600 × 1200, 800 × 800, 300 × 300 and wall tiles such as 300 × 450 — or enter your own. The grout joint, usually 2–3 mm for vitrified tiles, is added to each tile, so the count reflects how tiles are actually laid. Wastage covers cut tiles at the edges and breakage: 10% for a straight layout and 15% for a diagonal one, where every edge tile is cut; choosing a layout sets it, and you can change it. Enter the tiles in a box to get the number of boxes, and the price per box for the cost. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for repairs; a matching shade can be hard to find later.

How to use it
  1. Choose feet or metres and enter the area’s two sides.
  2. Choose the tile size, or enter your own.
  3. Set the joint and the layout (straight or diagonal).
  4. Add tiles per box and the price to get boxes and cost.
Limits and your data
  • Skirting tiles, adhesive, grout and labour are not included.
  • Very large tiles in a small room can waste more than 10%, since each offcut may be too small to reuse.
  • The area is a rectangle; for an L-shape, add the two parts.
  • Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

How many 2 × 2 tiles do I need for 100 sq ft?

A true 2 × 2 ft tile covers 4 sq ft: 25 tiles, plus 10%, 28. But tiles sold as 2 × 2 ft are 600 × 600 mm, a little smaller (3.9 sq ft with a 2 mm joint), which makes it 29 — the calculator uses the real size.

How much extra tile should I buy?

About 10% for straight laying and 15% for diagonal; more for small rooms with many cuts.

Does the grout joint matter?

A little: each joint adds to the area a tile covers, so wider joints need slightly fewer tiles.

How do I tile a wall?

Enter the wall’s width and height as the two sides, and choose a wall tile size.
