Speed, Distance and Time Calculator
Enter any two of speed, distance and time to get the third, in km/h, mph, m/s or knots, with the time in hours and minutes and the pace per km and mile.
Answer
v = d ÷ t
- Given (in base units): d = 10,000 m, t = 3,000 s
- v = d ÷ t = 3.33333 m/s
- Time
- 50 min 00 s
- Pace per kilometre
- 5 min 00 s
- Pace per mile
- 8 min 03 s
Values
Fill in any 2; leave the one to work out empty.
How is this calculated?
v = d ÷ t, so d = v × t and t = d ÷ v. 1 km/h = 1/3.6 m/s; 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s; 1 knot = 1,852 m per hour (all exact).Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Speed, Distance and Time Calculator solves the most used formula in everyday physics: average speed is distance divided by time. Enter any two of speed, distance and time, and the third is worked out with the formula and the working shown. Each field has its own unit — speed in kilometres per hour, miles per hour, metres per second, feet per second, knots, metres or feet per minute; distance in kilometres, miles, metres, feet and smaller; time in seconds, minutes, hours or days — so you can ask questions the way they come up: how long a 350 km drive takes at 80 km/h, how far you get in 45 minutes at 12 mph, or what speed covers a marathon in four hours. Under the answer the time is written in hours, minutes and seconds, and the speed as a pace — the time per kilometre and per mile — which is how runners, walkers and cyclists usually think about it.
How to use it
- Type two of speed, distance and time, and choose their units.
- Leave the third empty: it is worked out and highlighted.
- Read the time in hours and minutes, and the pace per kilometre and per mile, under the answer.
- Change the unit of the answer to see it another way — minutes instead of hours, mph instead of km/h.
Limits and your data
- This is average speed. A journey with stops, traffic or hills has moments faster and slower than the average; the total time is still distance ÷ average speed.
- Speed here has no direction. Velocity in physics does, so a round trip has an average velocity of zero but an average speed above it.
- For a speed that changes steadily — a car pulling away — use the acceleration calculator, which gives the distance covered too.
- Times are rounded to the second when written as hours and minutes; the field itself keeps six significant figures.
- Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or kept.
Questions
How long will it take to drive 350 km at 80 km/h?
4.375 hours, which is 4 h 22 min 30 s. Enter the speed and distance and leave time empty; set the time unit to hours or minutes as you like.
How do I work out average speed?
Divide the total distance by the total time. 10 km in 50 minutes is 12 km/h — the example the page opens with — or a pace of 5 minutes per kilometre.
What is a pace?
The time taken to cover a set distance, usually one kilometre or one mile. It is the reciprocal of speed: 12 km/h is a pace of 5:00 per km and 8:03 per mile.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. Enter a speed in km/h, change the unit of the result to m/s, or enter the same distance and time and switch the speed unit — the value converts exactly.
