  • Bedroom: 132 sq ft
  • Kitchen: 80 sq ft
  • Floor area = length × width for each room, added. Wall area = the perimeter × the height, less the doors and windows.
  • Doors are taken as 3 × 7 ft and windows as 4 × 4 ft, typical sizes; for paint, measure your own.

Rooms

Rooms (an L-shaped room is two rectangles)
For wall area and volume; leave empty to skip.

Feet and inches can be written 10' 6" or 10 6.

How is this calculated?
Floor area = length × width, for each room, added. Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height, less doors and windows. 1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft.

About this tool

What it does

Room Area Calculator works out the floor area of a room or a whole flat from measurements in feet and inches, metres, centimetres or millimetres, and shows the answer in both square feet and square metres — Indian plans, builders and shops use both. Enter each room’s length and width; an L-shaped room is simply two rectangles entered as two rows, and the total adds them all. Each room’s own area is listed so you can check a plan room by room. In feet you can write 10' 6" (or 10 6) for ten feet six inches. Add the ceiling height and it also gives the wall area, the room perimeters times the height less your doors and windows, which is what paint and wallpaper are bought for, and the volume in cubic metres and cubic feet, which matters for air conditioning and ventilation. It is the measured floor area of the rooms: a builder’s carpet, built-up or super built-up area also counts walls, balconies or common areas, so it will be larger than your rooms add up to.

How to use it
  1. Choose the unit you measured in.
  2. Enter each room’s length and width, one row per rectangle.
  3. Add the ceiling height, doors and windows for wall area and volume.
  4. Read the total and each room’s area.
Limits and your data
  • Rooms are rectangles: split odd shapes into rectangles, and leave out a rectangle’s missing corner by measuring the pieces.
  • Doors are taken as 3 × 7 ft (0.9 × 2.1 m) and windows as 4 × 4 ft (1.2 × 1.2 m); measure yours for exact wall areas.
  • Carpet area under RERA is defined in the Act and your agreement; use this to check your own rooms, not a legal area.
  • Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions

How do I work out square feet?

Multiply the length in feet by the width in feet. A 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft.

How do I convert square metres to square feet?

Multiply by 10.7639. 10 m² is 107.64 sq ft.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, measure each, and enter them as two rows; the total is the room.

Why is my flat’s carpet area different?

Carpet area includes internal wall thickness and some spaces you may not measure; built-up and super built-up areas add walls, balconies and common areas.
