How is this calculated?
Wall area = perimeter × height − doors × door area − windows × window area. Paint litres = area × coats × (1 + wastage) ÷ coverage. Tiles = floor ÷ (tile + joint)² × (1 + wastage), per room. Flooring boxes = area × (1 + wastage) ÷ box coverage.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Renovation Estimator turns a list of rooms into a shopping list and a budget. Measure each room once — length, width and height in feet and inches or metres, with its number of doors and windows — and choose what happens to it: walls painted, papered or left alone, the ceiling painted or not, and the floor tiled, laid with laminate, vinyl or wood, or left. From that one set of measurements the page works out every room’s floor area and its wall area less the doors and windows, then the materials for the whole job. Paint is the area to paint times the coats over the coverage printed on the tin, plus wastage, bought as the mix of tin sizes that leaves the least over. Tiles are counted per room from the tile size and grout joint, with wastage for cuts, then boxed. Flooring is the floor area plus wastage in whole boxes. Wallpaper is counted in drops per room, from the roll size and the pattern repeat, in whole rolls. These are the same rules as the separate paint, tile, flooring and wallpaper calculators. Add the prices you have been quoted, and optionally the labour rate per square foot or square metre for painting, tiling, laying the floor and papering, and you get the cost of each line, materials and labour separately and the total, with a room-by-room table to check against. The project is kept on this device as you type, so you can come back to it, and Download CSV, Save as image or Print give a list to take to the shop or share with a contractor.

Limits and your data
- Rooms are taken as rectangles; split an L-shaped room into two.
- Doors and windows all take the sizes you set; measure unusual ones and adjust.
- Primer, putty, tile adhesive, grout, skirting, underlay and transport are not included — ask your supplier or contractor.
- Prices and labour rates are the ones you enter; the page does not look them up.
- The estimate is worked out in your browser and kept only on this device. Nothing is uploaded.
Questions
How do I estimate the cost of renovating a flat?
Add each room with its size and choose its finishes, then enter the prices you were quoted for paint, tiles and flooring and the labour rates. The total covers those materials and that labour.
Why is paint worked out for the whole job, but tiles per room?
Leftover paint in a tin can go on the next wall, so it is bought for the total. Tiles are cut to each room’s edges, so the waste happens room by room and each room is rounded up.
Are doors and windows taken off the wall area?
Yes, for paint: each door and window is taken off at the size you set. Wallpaper is counted in full drops, since the paper around openings is cut from whole strips.
Can I come back to my estimate later?
Yes. It is kept on this device as you type. Start again clears it.
