About this tool
What it does
Marks Percentage Calculator works out your overall percentage from the marks you got in each subject. Enter each subject’s marks and the maximum it was out of — 100, 80, 50 or anything else, and they need not be the same — and it adds up the marks, adds up the maximums, and divides. It is the total that counts, not the average of each subject’s percentage, which can differ when the maximums differ. Each subject’s own percentage is listed under the result. Board results are often quoted on the best five subjects, so it can also show the percentage of your best three, four, five or six, picking the subjects with the highest percentages and naming them; on a tie, the subject listed first is taken. Marks can have up to two decimal places, as some internal assessments give halves, and everything is calculated exactly before rounding the final percentage half up to two places. The example is a CBSE Class 10 result with six subjects.
How to use it
- Enter each subject’s marks and the maximum it was out of; names are optional.
- Add a row for each further subject.
- Choose whether to also show the best three, four, five or six.
- Read the overall percentage, the best-N percentage and each subject’s.
Limits and your data
- Which subjects may count towards the best five, and whether a language must be included, is set by each board and college; this calculator simply takes the highest percentages.
- Grace marks, moderation and practical-only subjects are not modelled. Enter the marks as they appear on your mark sheet.
- Up to 60 subjects.
- Everything is calculated in your browser. Your marks are not sent anywhere or kept after you leave the page.
Questions
How do I calculate my percentage from marks?
Add all the marks you got, add all the maximum marks, divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. For 521 out of 600 that is 86.83%.
What is best of five?
The percentage over your five best subjects rather than all of them. Many admissions and cut-offs use it for CBSE and state board results.
What if subjects have different maximum marks?
Enter each one’s maximum. The overall figure uses the totals, so a subject out of 50 counts half as much as one out of 100.
Is the average of subject percentages the same?
Only when every subject has the same maximum. Otherwise use the total, which is what mark sheets show.
