About this tool

What it does

Ideal body weight formulas give one weight for a height and sex. This calculator shows the four best known, Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, so you can see how much they disagree, and puts them beside the healthy weight range from BMI. The formulas were designed for working out medicine doses and for insurance tables, not as personal goals, and the page says so plainly.

How to use it
  1. Choose your units, then your sex.
  2. Set your height. Weight does not change these formulas, but it is there so you can compare.
  3. Read the lowest and highest of the four formulas, each formula’s own result, and the healthy BMI range for your height.
Limits and your data
  • The formulas are not defined below 5 ft (152.4 cm). Below that, the calculator shows only the healthy BMI range.
  • They ignore frame size, muscle, age and ethnicity. Two people of the same height can be healthy at quite different weights.
  • They were fitted decades ago to particular groups: Devine for drug dosing (1974), Hamwi as a quick clinical rule (1964), Robinson and Miller as refinements (1983).
  • The healthy BMI range shown uses the WHO cut-offs. For Asian and Indian adults the upper limit is lower; the BMI Calculator offers that scale.
  • What you enter stays in this page. It is not saved, not sent anywhere and not put in the page address, because body measurements are personal.

Questions

Why do the formulas disagree?

They were fitted to different data for different purposes. At 6 ft (183 cm) the male results spread from about 73 kg (Miller) to 80 kg (Hamwi). That spread is a reminder that no single number is your ideal.

Which formula do doctors use?

Devine is the one used most in hospitals, mainly to calculate doses of some medicines and settings for ventilators, which is what it was made for.

Is the BMI range better?

It is broader, which is more honest: any weight in it is associated with lower risk on average. Read the formula results as points inside or near that range, not as targets.

Does muscle change my ideal weight?

Yes, and none of the formulas know about it. A muscular person can be healthy well above every result here.
