GPA Calculator (SGPA)

Work out your semester GPA (SGPA) from each course’s credits and grade, on the 10-point UGC scale (O to F) or the US 4.0 scale. Exact, rounded half up.

About this tool

What it does

GPA Calculator works out your semester grade point average — SGPA in most Indian universities — from the courses you took, their credits and the grade you got in each. A course worth four credits counts twice as much as one worth two, so the average is weighted: each grade’s points are multiplied by the course’s credits, the products are added, and the total is divided by the credits. Two scales are built in. The 10-point scale is the one in the UGC guidelines for the Choice Based Credit System, used by most Indian universities and autonomous colleges: O is 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5, P 4 and F 0. The 4.0 scale is the common US one with plus and minus grades. If your grade card shows points rather than letters, type the points instead of a letter. The arithmetic is exact: credits and points are held as whole numbers of tenths and hundredths, so a GPA of 8.125 shows as 8.13 rather than the 8.12 a calculator using floating point can give. The working is shown under the result so you can check it against your grade card.

How to use it
  1. Pick the grading scale your university uses.
  2. For each course, enter its credits and your grade (a letter from the scale, or the grade points).
  3. Add a row for each further course; course names are optional.
  4. Read the SGPA and the working below it.
Limits and your data
  • Universities differ in small ways: some do not count failed courses’ credits until they are cleared, some count audit or non-credit courses differently, and some truncate the SGPA instead of rounding it. Your grade card and regulations are the final word.
  • The 10-point scale follows the UGC model; a few universities use other letter-to-point mappings (for example A at 9 and B at 8). Type the points directly if yours does.
  • On the 4.0 scale some colleges give A+ 4.0 and some 4.3; this calculator uses 4.0 for A and has no A+.
  • Everything is calculated in your browser. Your courses and grades are not sent anywhere or kept after you leave the page.

Questions

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the cumulative average over all semesters so far, weighted by each semester’s credits. Use the CGPA calculator to combine your SGPAs.

Why do credits matter?

A course with more credits takes more teaching time, so its grade counts for more. An O in a four-credit course lifts your SGPA twice as much as an O in a two-credit course.

Does a failed course count in my SGPA?

Under the UGC model an F carries 0 points and its credits count, which lowers the SGPA until the course is cleared. Some universities leave it out instead. Enter it or leave it out to match your regulations.

Can I enter grade points instead of letters?

Yes. Type a number up to the scale’s maximum, such as 8.5, in the grade box.
