Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out the petrol or diesel cost of a drive from the distance, your mileage in km/L, L/100 km or mpg, and the price at your pump, one way or there and back.

Cost

Enter the distance, your vehicle’s economy and the price per litre where you fill up.

Drive

Today’s price at your pump; prices change daily and differ by state.
How is this calculated?
Litres = distance ÷ km per litre. Cost = litres × price per litre (rounded to the paisa). Cost per km = cost ÷ distance.

About this tool

What it does

Fuel Cost Calculator works out what the petrol, diesel or CNG for a drive will cost. Enter the distance in kilometres, your vehicle’s fuel economy — in kilometres per litre, the way Indian drivers usually say mileage, or litres per 100 km, or miles per gallon (US or UK) — and the price per litre at your pump. Tick there and back for a return journey. It gives the litres the drive takes, the cost to the paisa, the cost per kilometre and the economy in km/L. Fuel prices are not built in: they change every day and differ from state to state and even pump to pump, so a figure stored in a page would soon be wrong; type the price on the pump or your last receipt. For the economy, the figure your own vehicle actually gets is far better than the brochure’s: the Mileage Calculator finds it from two full-tank fills.

How to use it
  1. Enter the distance; tick there and back for a return trip.
  2. Enter your vehicle’s economy and choose its unit.
  3. Enter today’s fuel price per litre.
  4. Read the litres, the cost and the cost per km.
Limits and your data
  • Economy changes with traffic, speed, AC, load and hills; city driving can use a third more fuel than the highway.
  • For CNG, enter the economy in km per kg and the price per kg: the arithmetic is the same.
  • Tolls and parking are not included here; the Trip Cost Calculator adds them.
  • Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions

How do I calculate petrol cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your mileage to get litres, then multiply by the price per litre. 300 km at 15 km/L is 20 litres; at ₹95 a litre, ₹1,900.

Where do I find my car’s mileage?

Measure it: fill the tank full, note the odometer, drive, fill full again and divide the kilometres by the litres. The Mileage Calculator does this.

Why is the fuel price not filled in?

Prices change daily and by state; a built-in figure would be wrong within days. The price on your pump is the right one.

Can I use it for a bike?

Yes: enter the bike’s mileage in km per litre.
