Flooring Calculator
Work out the boxes of laminate, vinyl or wooden flooring to buy: the floor area plus wastage, whole boxes from the area each covers, and the cost at your price.
Flooring
- With 10% wastage
- 198 sq ft
- Boxes = (floor area × (1 + wastage)) ÷ area per box, rounded up: boxes are sold whole.
- 10% wastage suits a straight layout in a plain room; allow 15% for diagonal or herringbone layouts and rooms with many corners.
Floor
How is this calculated?
Boxes = floor area × (1 + wastage) ÷ area per box, rounded up. Cost = boxes × price per box, or area bought × price per unit area.Runs in your browser — nothing you enter leaves this device.
About this tool
What it does
Flooring Calculator works out how many boxes of laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood or other boxed flooring to buy for a room. Enter the floor’s length and width, or its area, in feet or metres. Ten per cent is added for wastage — the offcuts at the end of each row, cuts around doorways and the odd damaged plank — which suits a straight layout in an ordinary room; allow 15% for a diagonal or herringbone layout or a room with many corners. Enter the area one box covers, printed on the box or the product page, and it rounds up to whole boxes, since boxes are sold whole, and shows how much floor those boxes actually hold. Add the price, per square foot, per square metre or per box, and it works out the cost, to the paisa. Order every box from one batch, as colour and texture can differ between batches, and keep the spare planks for repairs.

Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
About 10% for a straight layout and 15% for diagonal or herringbone, and more for rooms with many corners.
How do I find the area per box?
It is printed on the box and the product page, for example 21.5 sq ft or 2 m² per box.
Does it include underlay?
No. Underlay is usually sold by the roll for the floor area itself, with little wastage.
Why round up to whole boxes?
Shops sell flooring by the box, and it is better to have a few spare planks than to run short mid-room.
