Final Exam Grade Calculator
Find the score you need in the final exam to reach the overall grade you want, from your current grade and the final’s weight, with a table of common targets.
Score needed
| Target | Final needed |
|---|---|
| 90% | Not reachable |
| 80% | 92% |
| 70% | 67% |
| 60% | 42% |
| 50% | 17% |
| 40% | Reached already |
- Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. Rounded up, since a score a fraction below it falls short.

About this tool
What it does
Final Exam Grade Calculator works out the score you need in the final exam to finish a course with the overall grade you want. It needs three numbers: your grade so far, before the final, as a percentage; how much the final is worth in the overall grade, from the syllabus; and the overall grade you are aiming for. Your current grade counts for the rest of the weight, so with 72% so far and a final worth 40%, the coursework contributes 72 × 0.6 = 43.2 points and the final must bring the other 36.8 — a score of 92%. The answer is rounded up, because a score a fraction below it would fall just short. If the target is already secured even with 0 in the final, it says so; if it would take more than 100%, it says that it cannot be reached with the final alone. A table under the result shows the score needed for the common boundaries from 90% down to 40%, so you can see what each grade would take.
How to use it
- Enter your current grade before the final, as a percentage.
- Enter the final exam’s weight in the overall grade.
- Enter the overall grade you want.
- Read the score needed and the table of other targets.
Limits and your data
- It assumes the overall grade is a straight weighted average of the coursework and the final. Courses with a minimum mark in the final, dropped lowest scores or curves need their own rules applied.
- If your current grade is not yet a percentage of the coursework done, work that out first: your marks so far over the marks available so far.
- Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Questions
What score do I need on my final to get an A?
Enter the percentage your course needs for an A (often 90 or 80) as the target. The table shows the common boundaries at once.
Why is the answer rounded up?
Because the target is a minimum. Rounding down could give a score that leaves you a hundredth short.
What if the final is worth 100%?
Then your current grade does not count and the score needed is the target itself.
Can I use it for a midterm or any weighted exam?
Yes. Enter that exam’s weight and your grade on everything else so far.
