EV Charging Cost Calculator

Work out what charging an electric car or scooter costs: units drawn with charging losses, the cost at your rate, the time on your charger and cost per km.

Charge

Enter the battery size, the charge levels and your rate per unit.

Battery and rate

From the car’s specifications.
Your home tariff, or the charger’s price per kWh.
3.3 or 7.2 for home; 25–60 for public fast chargers.
From the trip computer, for cost per km.
How is this calculated?
Energy stored = capacity × (to % − from %). Units drawn = stored ÷ efficiency. Cost = units × rate. Time ≈ units ÷ charger kW. Cost per km = Wh per km ÷ 1000 ÷ efficiency × rate.

About this tool

What it does

EV Charging Cost Calculator works out what charging an electric car, scooter or bike costs and how long it takes. Enter the battery’s usable capacity in kWh (from the specifications), the charge level you start from and charge to, and the rate you pay per unit — your home electricity tariff, or the price per kWh shown by a public charger. Charging loses some energy as heat in the charger, cables and battery, so more is drawn from the supply than reaches the battery: the efficiency is set to 88% and you can change it. It gives the units drawn and their cost, the energy stored, and the time on your charger’s power. Add the car’s energy use per kilometre from its trip computer and it also shows the cost per kilometre — usually a fraction of petrol’s — and the range that charge gives.

How to use it
  1. Enter the usable battery capacity.
  2. Enter the charge you start from and charge to.
  3. Enter your rate per unit and check the efficiency.
  4. Add the charger’s power and the car’s use for time and cost per km.
Limits and your data
  • The time is approximate: charging slows above about 80%, most of all on DC fast chargers.
  • Home tariffs are often in slabs; use the rate of the slab your charging falls in, or your bill’s average.
  • Some public chargers bill by time or add a session fee; add that separately.
  • Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

A 30 kWh battery from 20% to 80% stores 18 kWh; at 88% efficiency that is about 20.5 units, ₹164 at ₹8 a unit.

How many units does an electric scooter take to charge?

A 3 kWh scooter battery from empty to full takes about 3.4 units from the socket.

Why are more units drawn than the battery holds?

Chargers and batteries lose some energy as heat — usually 10–15% on a home charger.

How long does a 7.2 kW charger take?

About units drawn ÷ 7.2 hours: roughly 3 hours for 20 units, a little longer near full.
